Fourteen seasons in you’d think that Supernatural will finally reach a point where it seems they’re running out of ideas. After talking with the executive producers at San Diego Comic Con, we’re 100% sure that they’re just starting!
Joining us from Supernatural are executive producers Robert Singer, Andrew Dabb, Eugenie, and Brad Buckner about living a life without Dean, new challenges, and surprising romances.
First off, Sam. According to Robert Singer, he’s inherited a whole new set of problems while on the search for his possessed brother aka the person he cares about most in the world.
“Sam has kind of inherited the refugees from the other universe and it’s not like they can go out and get a job at an ad agency right away. And they’re experienced fighters. So Sam is kind of leading a band of hunters. He takes his responsibility kind of seriously. It’s kind of a new roll for him.”
With such a heavy load on his shoulders, it’d wear anyone down, even a man used to be the BAMF general to Dean’s leader.
Singer continued by saying, “It kind of wears on Sam a little bit. He feels an enormous responsibility for these people. He’s trying to train them. So, that combined with him looking for Dean, he’s pretty much at his wits end. He’s trying to balance a lot because first and foremost he’s got to get his brother back.”
Andrew Dabb expanding on this by pointing out that Dean was the most stable character throughout the past few. So his disappearance/possession is going to cause problems left and right.
“Dean has been the most stable character throughout the past few seasons to say the very least. And him being gone, him being changed, creates a lot of problems for everybody. Problems not only in terms of what do you do without Dean, but problems in terms of like, suddenly you…sometimes you don’t realize how much you rely on someone until they’re gone, basically. And now Dean is gone.”
So Sam won’t be the only one mourning Dean and trying to figure out what to do without the rock that is Dean. Mary will mourn. Castiel will mourn. Jack will mourn. Even New Charlie and Bobby will mourn in their own, once more proving how pivotal Dean is to Supernatural.
“I think all of our characters are going through what that means for them.” Dabb continued by saying, “And then Dean himself, he’s really in a position he’s never been in before. He’s trapped. He’s being dragged along.”
This is where the executive producers are taking extra care and time in figuring out how to expand and build up on Dean’s story. Even if that means making him experience every dangerous and dastardly thing Michael is up to.
Dabb explained, “Even though he’s not the person reaching out and killing people, it’s still his hands. He still feels it. He still has a sense of what’s going on. And that changes him as well.”
