It is something many within the Wattpad community has pondered for a while. With a system devised to seek out the best and brightest stories with the use of technology, how long before this ingenuity transitions from the free online realm it has dominated, into the lucrative publishing industry. Many popular Wattpad stories have already made the leap; such as the intensely popular After by Anna Todd, Arrowheart (formerly The Love Curse) by Rebecca Sky and Love Scene Take Two (formerly Between Takes) by Alex Evansley. There is no shortage of inventive stories, talented writers and groundbreaking content on the forum, and now they have taken the next step to bridging the gap from online to on the shelf.
January 24, 2019 Wattpad announced its latest venture: Wattpad Books, a publishing division of the company. With other divisions such as Wattpad Studios, which takes content and matches it with other companies to beneficial partnerships, this latest avenue is sure to be a great hit. Stories will begin to hit the shelves starting in Fall 2019 and will debut six titles this year, all available at retailers across North America, with Macmillan as its U.S. distributor and Raincoast Books as its Canadian distributor.
Wattpad released a press release to announce the exciting news:
“With billions of data points from Wattpad’s global audience of more than 70 million people, Wattpad Books will introduce diverse, new, and undiscovered voices to book lovers everywhere. Readers will find new genres, category-bending spins on traditional genres, narratives that tackle the experiences and struggles of marginalized communities, and stories that speak to the diversity of Wattpad’s global community online.” – Wattpad

Wattpad has already broken barriers with the likes of Netflix’s most watched show in 2018 with the Kissing Booth (a Wattpad created story by Beth Reekles), as well as the aforementioned International best seller and soon to be hit film After by Anna Todd. Making authors dreams come true in a myriad of ways is nothing new for the media and tech company, and with their approach of data about what people choose to read rather than what editors think they read, is truly a groundbreaking.
We can’t wait to see what they will come up with in the future!
