It’s not too much longer until the new season of The 100 and we’re excited. The show has the potential to feel like a reboot, but it also has the potential to continue to be fantastic.
At Wondercon, Showrunner Jason Rothenberg gave the Wondercon press room some teasers about the new villains coming to The 100. What did he have to say about them? Well when asked about the subject Rothenberg didn’t hold back. Who are the new people coming to the show?
Jason Rothenberg: It’s a different group of villains.
Q: Are they all villains?
JR: Well, they’re all criminals except for Shaw, who is part of the crew. But you know in The 100 we try and sort of dimensionalize our villains so that we understand them.
It was a little trickier to dimensionalize this group, frankly, because we wanted to be true to the fact that they are all maximum security prisoners. But… Diyoza has more of a political… she did some things that were horrible, in the name of her cause, but her cause was probably the right one. That doesn’t make her any less of a killer or terrorist, but at least we’ll understand what made her tick… She’s a very interesting new addition to the show.
Q: What about Mike Dopud?
JR: Oh, he’s great too. He plays a serial killer named Vinson. I can’t talk too much about that character. There’s an interesting relationship that develops between him and somebody else that I think will surprise people.
Q: So are you going to be revisiting A.L.I.E. this season? Is that going to be addressed?
JR: This season? I don’t think A.L.I.E. comes up this season.
Q: Even though she’s still on the Ark?
JR: (Laughs) Is she?
Q: We heard you took Kane down a dark path this season.
JR: I think Kane actually doesn’t go down a dark path… He had a hard time in the bunker over those six years. He didn’t agree with the way Octavia was running things. And he blames himself in a lot of ways for what happened. He didn’t intervene to stop it. And so we’ll see that play itself out pretty early. But I would say actually it’s not a dark path at all… Kane has come a long way and he’s trying to do the right thing and trying to stay on that path but it’s hard.
Season 5 of The 100 premieres Tuesday, April 24 at 9 p.m./8 p.m. Central on The CW.
