Just as Eurovision entered its Grand Final, we were presented with a new trailer for the Doctor Who specials and their titles. In it, we see even more of David Tennant‘s glorious (yet strange) return as The Doctor. We also get to see Catherine Tate‘s Donna Noble trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And my favorite, and seriously most anticipated introduction, is the introduction of Yasmin Finney as Rose Temple-Noble.
According to Russell T. Davies, the returned showrunner, “The titles are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet. Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna and disaster about to be unleashed!” And with titles like The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle, you know we’re all in a good time. Drop Neil Patrick into the mix, who seems to be the second special, and we need it to be November now!
The teaser also presents us with the biggest question of all: why did this face come back? Sure, we’re happy to see Tennant with Donna and another version of Rose, but we were ready to move forward. And instead, we’re moving backward. But if it means giving Donna her memories back and truly understanding how much she changed the universe, it’ll be worth it. Even more so if she sets off on her own adventures with what we assume is her daughter Rose.
Which, I know this isn’t our Rose Tyler. But there’s something beautiful about Rose living on in so many ways. And maybe, just maybe, this show will explore the return of The Doctor’s handy self and show the life he made with Rose. If not, that’s what fanfiction is for. Even then, here’s hoping this new Rose gets plenty of opportunities to prove she’s as smart and capable as her namesake.
