Wynonna Earp‘s “Life Turned Her That Way” was a rough episode. And we don’t mean that as to say it was a bad episode. It was an excellent episode full with moments that we can’t stop thinking about. It was a rough episode because of the way it started with Wynonna being a drunken monster killing badass and it ended with a deadly Waverly who finally keyed into her powers.
First up Wynonna. Our girl is going through some rough times and she doesn’t even care. She doesn’t have her child. She lost her love. And her sister is moving on with her life with Nicole. So instead of being a party pooper she has moved over to the barn and gone about her business. But just because she thinks her sister is “moving on” doesn’t mean that she is. That’s why the intervention happened. Her sister cares.
We’ve got to admit that interventions set us on edge. Having someone confronting you about the things that you’re doing that are self destructive….well, that doesn’t sound ideal and we would be a little pissy about it too. But we understand where Waverly and Nicole were coming from and at her heart, Wynonna knows that too. She’s just angry and feeling cornered. That’s when people lash out and ultimately regret what they’ve said.
And Wynonna regretted it almost as soon as it came out of her mouth but she was too stubborn to say it. Instead she channeled her frustration to the next big thing. Shocker when the next big thing is her sister walking into the fog surrounding her Purgatory and getting kidnapped by Jolene at the same time. The Wynonna and Nicole team up that followed was predictable and it going south was also predictable as well.
Jolene wasn’t someone we were expecting. We honestly thought she was done for. Kaput. Done-zo. But she wasn’t. And she’s been waiting for that moment, that opportunity, to get the revenge she so desperately wanted by having Waverly transform into who she really was or is. Her subsequent torturing of Waverly was hard to watch because in a twisted and backwards way, she did want “the best” for Waverly. Even if that best meant her dying too.
Waverly’s transform came hard fought. She’s so strong, always has been, but we think the combination of everything that happened on that day in particular weakened her defenses. If not she would’ve fought off Jolene’s taunts like nothing. And we feel for Waverly in “Life Turned Her That Way” because if we were in her shoes we would probably end up in the same place too, especially separated from all those she loves and coming this close to being rescued twice.
What comes next….well, we have no idea what comes next. Thank God the fog has been taken care of. But what comes next for Waverly? Was this always meant to happen to her? Was she always meant to have this darker part of her that would transform her into the bringer of death? Whatever it is, we are here for it and more. Because epic things and moments happen in shows when the angel of the story takes a dark turn.
We’re hoping that the grounded love that Wynonna and Nicole have for Waverly can bring her back from the brink. If not, Wynonna is going to have to make the hardest decision of her life. Does she let the world burn? Or does she put her sister down like every other big that has wanted to destroy Purgatory and the world? We’ve got a feeling the decision is not going to be an easy one.
