Wynonna Earp‘s “Old Souls” is exactly what we wanted and needed from this show. Yes, we’re sad it’s over and it was crazy how in the first 10 minutes everything went to shit. But we couldn’t be happier for the journey that brought us here today. And we’re over the moon that Wayhaught, our dear Waverly and Nicole, finally got to say their “I do’s.”
We cried many times during “Old Souls.” Partially because it’s the end of an era. (Yes, I’m going to call Wynonna Earp an era.) We fought so hard for a season 5 and saying goodbye isn’t easy. It never is. Especially when you have a cast like Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Katherine Barrell, Tim Rozon, Varun Saranga, Martina Ortiz-Luis, and Greg Lawson.
We were moved to tears by the Wayhaught vows. Waverly poured her heart out to her shield in a way that felt like everything we’ve been dreaming about since Nicole and her locked eyes. And Nicole returned the favor to her angel and turned us into a blubbering mess that couldn’t see the screen because we were crying so much.
LGBTQ relationships are still few and far in between on TV. They’re even more rare when it comes to the length that a couple is together and if they even make it to the altar and get married. But Wayhaught made it. They made it and there was no sudden gotcha moment where something went wrong and danger destroyed them or killed them.
Wayhaught survived. They’ve survived and fought for each other this whole time. And this is their happy ending. Or beginning as this episode taught us. Just because the show is over doesn’t mean that their adventures are going to stop. They are bound to this land and each other until they’re “Old Souls” just like the episode is titled.
Another cry worthy moment was between Wynonna and Waverly. Wynonna has been worried about what married life means for her relationship with her sister (and in this episode what would happen if she left with Doc) and after she kind of put on the haunted dress and made a mess. “Old Souls” made sure to rectify that and make it so the love between them is unshakeable and everlasting.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Wynonna and Doc. We understand why Doc wanted to move on and why Wynonna wanted to stay. Both made sense. But what made even more sense, and why they persevered (besides Waverly not letting Wynonna stay for her) was because of the love they share and the risks they are willing to take for each other. That’s a love worth fighting for and we’re glad to see it come to this conclusion.
And then there’s Nedley and Nicole. We didn’t expect to bawl but here we are, wiping off more tears. They surprised us with their honesty, their love, and we wish that we would’ve seen more of them together in Wynonna Earp. Well, more than we already saw. And more is the perfect way to end this review.
We want more of Wynonna Earp. We want more of Waverly and Nicole. We want more of Wynonna and Doc. And we want more of Team Earp in general and every week for years to come. Why? Because this is our home; the Homestead and Purgatory. And wherever we go, we’ll hold a small bit of Wynonna Earp inside of us. So thank you Emily Andras and thank you Beau Smith.
You’ve changed us forever and there’s no going back.
