Disney+ is bringing us more of Gaston and LeFou, and we really, really can’t think of anything we’d want less. The long-rumored prequel to Beauty and the Beast, focusing on Luke Evans and Josh Gad’s version of the characters, has now been officially confirmed, and we’re just shaking our heads at the notion that this is something we need. Or care about.
Why?
It gets worse, if possible. The show is being developed, executive-produced and written by Gad (at least there’s that), Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, each of whom will serve as a co-showrunner. Yeah, you read that right, those are the two names behind the started-out-mostly-okay then turned bad and awfully problematic Once Upon A Time. I wouldn’t trust those two around many stories, but I especially, especially wouldn’t trust them around LeFou’s story. And the casting of Briana Middleton, who is set to play newcomer Tilly, only worries me more. Once Upon A Time really, really didn’t treat its female characters right.
Even if I trusted them to do it right, though, this is a still a weird decision for Disney+, you know, the streaming service that moved Love, Victor to Hulu because it didn’t fit the audience and scrapped the Lizzie McGuire reboot cause it was too adult. Gaston, on the other hand, he’s cool? Perfect role model!
Yeah, we’re sorry for Luke Evans and Josh Gad, two very talented performers, but we’re not looking forward to this one, no matter how many “questions” it’s supposed to answer.
