Doctor Who dropped the first look of Ncuti Gatwa and honestly…he’s serving looks left and right, making his Doctor stand out while keeping to the otherworldly aesthetic we know and love. Dressed in a checkered tartan coat and matching slacks, he’s giving us “I might’ve accidentally walked on stage at Paris Fashion Week.” The orange sweater, brown boots, gold necklace, and rings match the look as well. Also, the mustache, which I initially thought looked out of place, just works and seamlessly brings the look together.
Our love for Gatwa and his Doctor only grew from there when he posted a video of his new companion on the official Doctor Who Instagram account. Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday, is seen in her casual but cute outfit complete with a jean jacket, blue shorts, tights, and black boots. But it’s when Gibson herself took the camera and turned it on Gatwa, that we saw him in action. And he’s got it in the bag from this one outfit look.
He embodies the Doctor in a way I’ve never seen an actor do so before. It’s this vibrancy, confidence, and ease that absolutely shines from him as he shows off his outfit, laughs at matching a nearby van, and even when he shows of the Gallifreyan nail tattoos and rings he’ll be sporting. On anyone else, it wouldn’t work out, but for Gatwa, he is this character. And now, more than ever, the Doctor Who fandom welcomes him, his journey, and everything to come next for the new Doctor.
And we’re not the only ones who agree.
Some were mourning that they’d never be able to pull off this look like Gatwa does.
Others were saying the look is giving them David Tennant vibes while also making them appreciate Ncuti Gatwa’s look. Also, the plaid pants. It’s a Doctor look.
But the best response to his outfit was people bringing up Ncuti Gatwa’s outfit from Barbie.
Doctor Who is set to return in 2023.
