Millie Bobby Brown is preparing for a future post-Stranger Things with the release of her debut novel Nineteen Steps.
Described as an “epic story of love, loss and secrets” this historical novel is inspired by the life of Brown’s own grandmother Ruth, who survived the Bethnal Green Tube disaster. According to the BBC, this disaster happened during World War II and was said to be the biggest loss of civilian life in the UK during that time period. Apparently, 170 people were fleeing from an air raid into the east London station when they were crushed to death at the entrance of this shelter due to panic that led to asphyxiation.
In Nineteen Steps we follow 18-year-old Nellie Morris. She’s a young woman who lives with her family in Bethnal Green and is “enchanted with the idea of a broader world.” And just as Nellie is beginning to embrace a new life with Ray, the Bethnal Green incident happens, leading to catastrophic consequences. Subsequently, Nellie’s world is absolutely destroyed and a personal fight ensues where she tries to find happiness within the sorrow.
“Inspired by my Nanny Ruth, this book is very personal and close to my heart. I grew up listening to stories about her time living through the war. I’m honored to keep her story alive,” Brown said of the novel in a statement according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition, the executive editor at William Morrow, who has acquired the US & Canadian rights to publish the novel, it’s a story about “female resilience and the human spirit.”
Here’s hoping this is the first novel of many for the young star.
Nineteen Steps is set to publish on September 12, 2023.
