By this point, what happened at the end of the first episode of Secret Invasion is old news. We’ve gone through at least some of the stages of grief. Not that it has made grappling with the fact that Maria Hill — a character that was always more promise than actual reality in the MCU, is apparently gone for good. And we say apparently because we’ve always understood what the MCU is about. Plus, this is a show about Skrulls. There might be a twist coming our way. We hope there is.
And yet, we’ve hoped so before, when Marvel has done the same to female character after female character. And we’ve hardly ever gotten our wish. So our hopes are tempered with a healthy dose of reality. Especially when, after the episode, interviews came out with Cobie Smulders sounding pretty definitive.

Then, came reports that Smulders would actually be appearing in The Marvels. This could be because The Marvels and Secret Invasion‘s timelines coincide, because Maria Hill isn’t actually dead, because multiverse, because Skrulls or because the reports aren’t actually true — Smulders’ did tell Variety she knew nothing about those reports (but then again, when have Marvel actors ever told us the truth about anything that could be spoilers?). But either way, we’re here talking about it …so, that’s probably good.
Not just for Smulders, but for Secret Invasion. We have to admit that after that ending, we weren’t really all that excited about the rest. Despite Emilia Clarke. Despite the possibilities. We’ve been burned by Marvel one too many times before. But hey, right now …maybe we can hold on to hope.
Maybe we want to.
