Quite rarely does television shock me anymore. I think as we age, and with the amount of television that we watch, we do become used to somethings being repetitive. Rarely do we watch a television show and think about how the writers, directors and actors have made it feel fresh and new. DOC has managed to take a medical procedural and make it feel different; new.
When it comes to DOC, you never know what shoe is going to come falling down. Everything that you think that you know about a character; everything that you think you feel can change quickly. Like with this episode – I went in still thinking that Michael was the only reasonable person. Now, I severely dislike him.
It’s a strange feeling when a show manages to challenge you and keep you on your toes. That being said, I do love it when DOC does.
KATIE NEEDS TO BREATHE
As you may remember, last episode ended with Katie having a panic attack with both parents there for her. What I loved was that they immediately got her into therapy, trying to get Katie the help that she needs.
I think that if we look at all of the cast of characters, few have been put in a position like Katie. She’s torn between the past, the future, and the present – but not only her own. There is everything that she’s been through with her Mom, her Dad, loosing her brother, and also somewhere in there loosing herself.
Michael and Amy are asked to come back to therapy to help Katie and of course Michael is apprehensive. He doesn’t want to reopen the past – he’s been there. It doesn’t matter that Amy doesn’t remember being there. So, of course, he’s hesitant and somewhat cruel about going.
That frustrates me.
The only reason that Michael decides to go, is because Katie was like you’re going right?
We find out what he’s somewhat afraid of. Amy has been having all sorts of flashbacks and she keeps remembering texts that she sees on a phone from someone named, Nate. There’s so much going on at the hospital that she doesn’t think to ask about it. But when it comes flooding back to her, she remembers the interaction with Katie, where she learned from her daughter that Michael had been cheating on her.
ONE OF THEIR OWN
TJ being back is something excited. TJ has a lot of heart. Do I love that he’s been paying attention to Joan and wanting to learn from her? No. I expected more from him. Julie is sick and can’t stop running to the restroom.
I love so much that the revenge plot is over, because I think over this season, I have had enough. I wanted to learn more about characters and one that they are seeing shine this episode is Julie. Now she’s sick and Sonya asks TJ to look at her.
Julie is so embarrassed that she is going through this and it’s at work. She is also embarrassed because the guy that she’s been seeing heard her going through it all at home. Her natural inclination is to push him away, but when he finds out that she’s sick – he has made it clear that he is going no where.
That’s the type of man that we all need. He didn’t care if it was Crohn’s or tumor. He wasn’t going anywhere and he wasn’t giving up on her. As we learn more and more about her and the relationship she’s in, you can’t help but hope that we’ll get this kind of information about all characters.
We’re watching this show because we’re invested in the characters. We want to know that we can believe in them, as well as that they’ll be around a long time. Julie seems like she will be and that’s such a pleasant thing to see. You can’t wait this show and not think about how all of these characters fit together and make it work.
We’re glad that Julie ends up being okay.
YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER
I don’t pretend to understand anything about science. I hate science. I don’t understand anything about it – but watching these shows, sometimes I think that I am stupid to not try to understand it.
Andy and Andy are a married couple that are expecting. They were at a store and it was robbed, resulting is a shelf pushed over on the pregnant Mom. Her leg was hurt – and her treatment should be simple – fix the leg.
It’s never just that easy though.
She went into labor as they were treating her. It was a quick delivery of a baby girl. Father went off to help with the baby while Mama delivered the placenta. It wasn’t supposed to be the last time that he saw his wife. It wasn’t supposed to be the moment that everything changed. It wasn’t supposed to be the moment that Andy died.
As if that’s not bad enough, Dad Andy, was just trying to take care of his little girl when he’s told that he is not the father.
I don’t think that my heart has ever broken so much as seeing this man break, but also fight so hard to make everyone understand that his wife wouldn’t cheat on him. It was this moment of all of the fear that one could have that went across his face. It’s not everyone that would fight like he did.
I WILL FIGHT
Daddy Andy wasn’t about to let this go. I admired that about him. I admire anyone that fights for their family and makes sure that their kids are safe and loved. There is just this pain that overtakes everything and you can see it in his eyes.
I think that there is something special about an actor that can portray a character not only through their words and mannerisms, but also with their soul. I believe that when an actor can make you do that – believe that this is affecting them down to the bottom of their soul – it will affect people.
I was shocked with how much Amy wanted to help him and make sure that he was the father – if she could prove it at all.
And this is where we go back to – I don’t get science. There was something about absorption, IVF, chimera…
But all that mattered is that he was the father. Whatever fighting needed to be done didn’t have to be done. And I really think Amy needed that win.
Because everything else was a dumpster fire – one I didn’t know if she would recover from.
When she doesn’t show on time to therapy, but suddenly remembers that Michael cheated on her – my mouth was on the floor. Didn’t see that coming.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Rachel not finding Jake after seeing Amy – I mean she had to have know Amy was gonna ask him
- Jake showing up at his exes door – love him
- Jake isn’t perfect but he’s close
- I don’t like Joan, so I don’t miss her.
