The Rookie welcomes a new member to the family! The Rookie: North is now a reality! ABC announced that it has given the green light to a full season for this second spinoff of our favorite cop show. Here’s everything we know!
What We Can Expect From The Rookie: North?
The Rookie: North is the latest series set in the world of The Rookie, ABC’s long-running police drama from Alexi Hawley, which was recently picked up for another season. Deadline reports that both shows are currently planned for January premieres during the network’s midseason schedule. The original series will keep its usual 18-episode run, while North will start with just 10 episodes in its first season.
There’s also already some connection between the two shows onscreen. Nathan Fillion will show up as John Nolan in the pilot. Still, it doesn’t sound like the shows will be crossing over all the time. That was much easier to do with The Rookie: Feds, because both productions were shooting in Los Angeles. With North filming in Vancouver instead, coordinating those appearances becomes a lot more difficult.
Even so, crossover plans are clearly still part of the strategy moving forward. Speaking to Deadline, executive producer Alexi Hawley said he’s currently thinking about “maybe a couple of episodes, or two or three episodes a season.” That approach would fit with what we know so far. ABC has not confirmed whether both dramas will air on the same night, but they are expected to run at the same time during the season.
The all-new series stars Jay Ellis, Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe and Malik Watson. As for the team behind the scenes, along with The Rookie, this series are produced by Lionsgate Television in partnership with 20th Television. Hawley will serve as executive producer and writer, with Nathan Fillion, Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross and Michelle Chapman also executive producing. Jay Ellis is a producer.

The Plot:
The official synopsis for The Rookie: North is: “the show introduces Alex Holland who believed his midlife wasn’t worthy of a crisis. But after a violent home invasion ignites a dormant purpose, Alex battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as a rookie. Policing from the urban coast to the rural forest where backup isn’t just five minutes away, Alex must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies and himself, that he’s finally found something worthy of the fight.”
