Nearly six months after its second season, Disney+ and Hulu have renewed The Artful Dodger for Season 3. The downside for fans of the series is that it will be the show’s final season. Then again, it’s a real gift to get to see a show have the time to end on its own terms. The Artful Dodger certainly needs it after the myriad of cliffhangers and twists in the second season.
For instance, Fagin was buried alive after being believed to be dead. Inspector Henry Boxer discovered that the Professor was the one doing botched surgeries – but not before Sneed suffered a potentially life-ending injury. Oh, and Belle stopped Jack from leaving Port Victory, with her mother finally approving their relationship after telling Belle that her uncle is her biological father. Needless to say, a lot was going on in The Artful Dodger’s sophomore season, and a third season feels more than necessary to wrap up all of these dangling threads.

Deadline exclusively reported the news, saying that Thomas Brodie-Sangster, David Thewlis, and Maia Mitchell will reprise their respective roles in the show’s final season. The news is more than welcome after all these months. However, it’s not necessarily a surprise since Disney+ Australia teased the renewal with a carousel of memes on Instagram. “The renewal is a testament to the quality of this show, and everyone involved in making it,” Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Disney Australia and New Zealand’s SVP and managing director, said.
Deadline reports that, per Disney, The Artful Dodger is “the most-viewed Australian original title on Disney+.” James McNamara, David Maher, and David Taylor co-created the series. After the second season, we spoke with McNamara, who said he “would love to do a third season if we get that chance.” Now, The Artful Dodger team will have that chance.

Andrew Knight will lead the final season’s scripting as executive producer, with Dan Knight as script producer. Knight was the co-script lead and co-executive producer for The Artful Dodger’s first season. Sony Pictures Television’s Curio Pictures’ Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner will return as executive producers/producers, with Chris Martin-Jones as series producer. Ben Young and Ben C. Lucas will return to direct the show’s final season.
“We love that audiences have embraced the show’s unique blend of adventure, humour and romance, and we are planning for this season to be even more ambitious, surprising and unpredictable,” Porter added. We still don’t have any specifics about The Artful Dodger Season 3’s plot or when it may premiere. However, it is good to know that filming will begin in Sydney over the next few months. Hopefully, that means that we will see the final season – or at least know more about it – sooner rather than later. We hope there’s not another near four-year gap between seasons.
