In an effort to build a space for queer people like myself, every Tuesday I’ll be posting opinion pieces, listicals, reviews, and more focused on the LGBT community (and occasionally about the Latinx/WOC community since I am Latinx.) Welcome to Queerly Not Straight!
Hayley Kiyoko is changing the game when it comes to LGBTQ+ music. She’s unapologetic, funny, weird, and everything in between that makes you realize she’s just as human as everyone else. This allows her songs to touch queer hearts everywhere while exposing hetero people to the ordinary that is a queer life. And that matters. Hayley and her music matter!
So, to jump start your day, week, or month, here are our 6 favorite Hayley Kiyoko songs!
1. Feelings
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It is the sexiest (like I get goosebumps just thinking about this) song/video starring two women that I have ever seen in my queer life on this planet we call Earth.
Favorite Lyrics:
I’m hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I’m feelin’
This love asylum, like an island, just me and you
Spent the night, you got me high
Oh, what did you do?
I’m hooked on all these feelings
2. Curious
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It was the GAY BOP of Autostraddle’s A-Camp all camp long and the inspiration for queer dance lessons!
Favorite Lyrics:
If you let him touch ya, touch ya, touch ya, touch ya, touch ya, touch ya (yeah)
The way I used to, used to, used to, used to, used to, used to (yeah)
Did you take him to the pier in Santa Monica
Forget to bring a jacket, wrap up in him ’cause you wanted to?
I’m just curious, is it serious?
3. What I Need
One sentence explaining why we love this song: Besties realize how much they love each other during a road trip and give us the most epic running into each others arms and kissing scenes ever.
Favorite Lyrics:
Sure I would kiss you, I lay you with you
You broke, no, I can’t fix you
I won’t, no, won’t diss you
But babe, yeah, might miss you
If you’re cold and needed shelter
I’d hold you, but not sweat ya
I know we’re not together
But babe, I won’t forget ya
4. Sleepover
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It was the first unapologetically queer video I saw EVERRRRRRRR!
Favorite Lyrics:
You wanna be friends forever?
I can think of something better
I’m just feeling low, feeling low
Sleeping here right next to me
But will you ever mess with me? No
5. Gravel to Tempo
One sentence explaining why we love this song: Hayley Kiyoko is making EVERYONE and their mama know how and why she is lesbian Jesus!
Favorite Lyrics:
I’ll do this my way
Don’t matter if I break
I gotta be on my own
Lost in this feeling
Don’t ever need a reason
I gotta be on my own
6. I Wish
One sentence explaining why we love this song: Sweet song about finding love without taking anyone’s shit as seconds.
Favorite Lyrics:
Sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever let me in
I wonder if I’m ever gonna find somebody
I cry and I cry and I cry and I cry out to the heavens
Why won’t you just send me somebody?
7. Girls Like Girls
One sentence explaining why we love this song: It’s a slow jam that ends up being sweet and catchy AF while using a friendship developing into more as it’s center stage.
Favorite Lyrics:
Saw your face, heard your name
Gotta get with you
Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new
Isn’t this why we came? Gotta get with you
Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new
Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new
