A Discovery of Witches is back and we are here for more of this journey, starring Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont. And what a journey is ahead of us in season two! We’re 400 years in the past and there’s danger around ever corner. Diana doesn’t know what the next step is but she’s eager to try and learn more about herself with Matthew by her side. And Matthew….well, he’s become a little intense. But who wouldn’t when faced with a past you barely remember? So, without further ado, let’s dive into 2×01 of A Discovery of Witches!
Protecting Each Other

Let’s be honest, ok? Matthew has always been a little intense. Not Edward Cullen sorts of intense but intense, nonetheless. He’s never had anyone like Diana in his life and he wants to protect her from everything and anything. And returning to the past has set him on edge. Things were different 400 years ago and he knows there are threats around every corner. So…he’s been a little more intense and protective.
And Diana isn’t here for that shit. Thank God she isn’t. Because as well meaning as Matthew’s intentions are, this isn’t what A Discovery of Witches is all about. This show, and this ship in particular, is about partnership. This is about strange and unlikely unions that shift the world in surprising and welcome ways. Well, welcome ways for some. But we don’t care about those people that don’t like Bishmont.
Ok, back to Diana and Matthew.
We loveeeeee that Diana has no qualms at calling Matthew out on his bullshit. Yes, it’s 400 years in the past. And yes, he knows a little more than her about what it takes to live a life that long ago. But it’s not his place to try to protect her at all costs with no input from Diana. This is a partnership, a relationship, and Diana has proved time and time again that she can protect herself and those she loves, including Matthew.
This strength and continued attention to detail when it comes to Diana and her story, is what makes us love Bishmont so much. She’s not a doormat. She’s empowered. And if Matthew needs a reminder of that, as he tries to remember or act as the person he was all those years ago, Diana is there to help him as a means of becoming a stronger unit together.
The Levity

We know things are serious and all on A Discovery of Witches. They’ve got a book to find, a teacher to train Diana, and Matthew has some issues he needs work through. Plus the future and past are nipping at their heels at every turn. But the levity of this episode was outstanding. Who knew that Matthew knew so much about fashion? Seriously, second favorite moment of the episode.
It made us look back at Bishmont throughout season one. There’s always been a banter between them that lights both characters up. Previously, we’ve seen it when Diana’s curiosity at his past peeked through. And Matthew’s returning grin matched her energy. But we don’t think Matthew has brought the levity we saw in this episode ever before. And we love it.
Please give us more of fashionista Matthew Clairmont. Because he certainly doesn’t know what he was doing 400 years ago but he knows what appropriate clothes looks like back in the day? Sounds suspect to us. But seriously, as Matthew spirals in the darkness of his past and Diana tries to find out more about herself, I hope levity stays and continues to shine through both of these characters. It’s much needed, appreciated, and loved by all.
Can We Talk About How Hot They Are?

If you’re looking to thirst over Bishmont, then you came to the right place. They are sooooooo hot. Yes, looks are a core part of this. We have eyes. Diana looks like the fucking sun, about to take down anyone who comes at her, vampire or not. And Matthew, well he’s got this grin that makes us go, “Sweet Lord, I’m here for it.” Season two has elevated on that.
Matthew is rocking this beard that is working for him. Seriously, we never want it to go away. Please and thank you. And Diana, she’s just so elegant looking in anything she wears we may cry at her sheer perfection. Combine them together and Bishmont is a recipe for domination of our hearts and souls. #ISaidWhatISaid #IWillFollowThemForever
And then there’s the way they act around each other on A Discovery of Witches. When they first arrive in the past and are confronted by Kit, we were ready to throw hands. But we didn’t have to worry because A) Matthew was there with his intense voice, ready to throw his own hands and B) Diana looked two steps away from calling her long bound magic forth while throwing them hands.
IT WAS ALL SO HOT! And this is only episode one!
