Wildcats, class is back in session on Friday, May 14th. That’s right, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series returns in a little over a month. How exciting is that? We’ve known for over a year that the second season’s musical would be Beauty and the Beast, but that’s about all we knew. Now that we can officially start our countdowns to the Season 2 premiere, we have a trailer that gives us many clues about what’s waiting for us at East High.
The trailer addresses the question we’ve all been asking: Why isn’t High School Musical 2 the Spring musical? That seems like the logical continuation of all of this, and that’s exactly why Miss Jenn makes the executive decision to shake things up. Well, that and her ex-boyfriend Zack belittling the production of HSM by calling it “adorable.”
The stakes are higher than ever as East High enters the Alan Menken Awards for High School Musical Theater and faces North High’s The Little Mermaid production. Though this trailer doesn’t feature any music from either classic and beloved musicals, it does feature new original songs performed by HSMTMTS‘ incredible cast.

It’d be remiss of me not to mention that this East High/North High musical theater rivalry reminds me a lot of the Camp Rock/Camp Star one from Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. Trust me, that’s nothing but a compliment, and a good sign that I am going to love Season 2 of HSMTMTS.
There are so many quick cuts towards the end of the trailer; we suggest watching it slower to catch all the details. There’s a brief but cute moment between Ashlyn and Big Red. There’s also an iconic moment of the East High students putting their hands in for what appears to be a “What team? Wildcats!” moment that brings on the nostalgia.
Of course, there’s the drama that comes with Ricky and Nini trying to maintain their long-distance relationship while Nini is at the Youth Actors’ Conservatory. The trailer sees Nini stress the importance of the program and Ricky. Fingers crossed, Nini doesn’t sacrifice this opportunity for Ricky because if their love is as real as it appears to be, he’ll be waiting for her when she gets back. They’re teenagers, and long-distance is tough, but I have faith they can work this out. Then again, is anything ever that simple?
Like Carlos says, “Is this Mamma Mia 2? Cause here we go again!”
