Sweet Tooth tells the story of a ravaged world where hybrid children are a new norm that humans want to destroy. Why? Because humans fear the unknown and somehow this new wave of human/animal children are connected to a deadly contagion that has basically wiped out huge portions of the population on Earth. Fear is all these people have and why they are wary of someone like Gus, a human/deer hybrid played by Christian Convery.
Gus knows nothing of the world except what his father teaches him in their own little haven. And when his dad passes away and he meets Jepperd, played by Nonso Anozie, who starts him on a journey that will define who Gus is and change the minds of dozens of people; some out to kill him and others to save him. But most importantly, this journey is going to change how people see hybrids and the disease plaguing them forever.
To better prepare you for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, here are 5 reasons why you should be watching!
1. Gus and his optimism.
You would think that a show about a deadly virus and how it ravaged the world would make for a bleak story. And in many ways, Sweet Tooth is a bit dark. But the number one reason why this show works and why it’s filled with so much hope is Gus. His optimism, his inner light, is a driving force that keeps him going in life and what attracts others to him. He’s a person, a being, like none we’ve seen before and you’ll be glad to know him by the end of it.
2. Gus and Jepperd’s friendship.
Gus and Jepperd complete each other in many ways. While Gus is an explorer who sees hope at every turn, Jepperd acts like a counterbalance that is grounded in the harsh realities of this new world. Of course, Jepperd toughens up Gus, but Gus brings out the tender heart that Jepperd keeps locked away. And by the end of Sweet Tooth you’ve got a pair that care for each other without erasing the presence of Gus’ father in his life.
3. The badass known as Bear.
Stefania LeVie Owen plays Bear, a young woman who has fought her way to survive this world. And instead of letting what happened to the adults change her, she chose a different path; one where she is on the side of hybrids like Gus. Her friendship, guidance, and love help carry the hope that Gus shares with the world. And along the way Bear realizes that maybe the end of the world gave her something she hasn’t had: a family.
4. Aimee and Wendy.
Gus and Jepperd aren’t the only ones who are cute as hell. Aimee and Wendy are too! Played by Dania Ramirez, Aimee had never found her place or her purpose in life. She was just making due with each day and surviving without truly living. That all changed when Wendy came into her life. With Wendy, Aimee got a chance to explore parts of herself that she never knew were there and it’s thanks to this kind child played by Naledi Murray.
5. The Singh’s.
While Gus, Jepperd, Bear, and Aimee are dealing with this out in the wild of this desolate world, the Singh’s are doing pretty well. They have a home, they have electricity, and they have each other. The only thing that is stopping this family from being perfect is at Rani, played by Aliza Vellani, is sick. And Aditya, played by Adeel Akhtar, will do anything to save his wife, including paying the ultimate price.
