This is how you celebrate a birthday! At least, it’s how you celebrate a birthday if you’re Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex. Yesterday, while celebrating her 40th birthday (which yay, happy birthday!!🎉🎉🎉) Markle announced her 40×40 initiative, which encourages people to commit 40 minutes of their time to support women going back to work. It’s a pretty great initiative, and it shows how in touch the Duchess actually is with what’s going on in the world.
Melissa McCarthy joined Meghan in the video announcement, which also featured a Prince Harry cameo, a brief glimpse of baby Lili and the couple’s beagle, taking a nap in the background. Cause, you know, beagles.

Among those who have committed to giving 40 minutes of their time are Adele, Amanda Gorman, Amanda Nguyen, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, Gloria Steinem, José Andrés, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and Stella McCartney.
A statement released by the Duchess explains that her new initiative “is being spurred in response to the tens of millions of women around the world who have left the workforce in the past two years (largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic), including two million women in the U.S. As women continue to reenter the workforce, we believe that mentorship is one way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength.”
Here’s to Meghan’s new project, and her continued happiness. 🥂
