We’re here one more week! After the previous week, The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire” is an episode in which Chenford begins to take bigger steps, while Harper must face her fears and a new great threat emerges. Time for a review!
Here we go!
Chenford is on fire in The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire.” We continue to take bigger and bigger steps in the right direction. For now, the two of them are going to work side by side again … although it has taken a lot for this to be the case. Gray already advised Tim to choose Lucy as his assistant but he… didn’t. Why? I think the main reason is fear. Tim is scared of everything about Lucy right now.
He is afraid to take the step in case everything goes wrong and he is afraid not to take it in case he loses the opportunity for everything to go well. So be that as it may, it would be difficult to have her by his side as his assistant because now he wants to get away from her, try to forget her and if they work side by side … that will be impossible. It will be impossible not to see her. That is why he doesn’t choose her. Tim can make whatever excuse he wants, but that’s the real reason. And she is pissed off.
It seems a bit childish but it’s true. Because they have the opportunity to work together again, to work on whatever is emerging between them, to see what could happen and he has rejected that. He has rejected her. And she doesn’t understand why, she doesn’t know why and that is killing her. So she fights for him to confess that he needs her. That he wants to have her next to him.

From here on it is a war of wills between the two of them because the two are similar and they don’t want to lose, they don’t want to beg … so the two end up in a draw, neither begs …not exactly … but they both do.
Seriously, kiss now!
Harper had a rough day in The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire.” Or rather, a hard night. She was dating James and Aaron, enjoying going slow, having that freedom of choice… but it all ended in disaster in the end. What a shocker.
James gets off the train the moment he sees Aaron there, ready to have dinner with Nyla… it’s too much. He had accepted the non-exclusive thing for her, because he liked her very much and he hoped that, somehow, she would realize that she felt the same about him and chose him. So he decided to focus on the good part of this situation, on the way he feels when he is next to Harper, on how good it feels to laugh with her, to talk to her…trying not to think that he was not the only one with whom she talks or laughs.
But seeing what this is all about live makes James open his eyes. This is not what he wants. He wants him and Nyla to be exclusive and see what happens from there… he’s not going to take this situation anymore. If she hasn’t chosen him yet…she’s not worth waiting for.
What happens here is this type of situation in which you put 200% into something hoping that it turns out your way, but something happens that shows you in a brutal and unequivocal way that it isn’t happening. And then you realize … and you decide to move away, because you know that it is not worth it to continue there. It makes you angry, frustrates you, even saddens you, but you know it’s for the best.
But James’s expression, his pain… it marks Nyla. She can’t forget it, she can’t stop thinking about it and she knows she screwed up. What she feels for James is important, he is the first and the only one that she really wanted to invite, he is the only one that she cannot get out of her mind. So why did Nyla decide to date Aaron? I think because her last relationship was her marriage and that ended horribly badly so Nyla is afraid of being with someone in a long and formal relationship again. But if you don’t risk … you don’t win.

So this mess helped Nyla accept her growing feelings for James and decide to really try with him and for James to give Nyla a second chance, so they could start from scratch. I like these two together.
On the other hand, I really like the change we see in The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire” regarding the relationship between Adrien and Harper. She presses him the same as all her recruits, maybe a little more but they are no longer sharp darts that are aimed at making him quit.
Wes made a deal with the devil in episode 1 and I’m sure he knew it was going to be difficult but not that difficult. In The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire” this gangster shows that he Wes won’t be able to quit him so easily, but that he will need to fulfill his agreement, no matter what this man asks … if not Angela and their son will suffer the consequences. Right now Wes feels at a dead end and like he has no escape.
He must help this criminal because otherwise he is going to kill his family but, at the same time, doing so turns his stomach because it is betraying not only his principles but also the law … and he doesn’t know what to do to solve this.
We have the solution: tell Angela. She has to know. Angela will understand why Wes did it and she will help him get out of this before he ends up in jail or dead. She will support him but if Wes doesn’t tell her anything and she finds out later… Angela will have a hard time forgiving that because she will feel that Wes betrayed her trust. So he needs to tell her. Now.

Although I understand why he doesn’t. Part of him doesn’t want to worry her or involve her in this and another part of him is afraid of her reaction, afraid of losing her, so that keeps him from telling her and he lies by omission which will inevitably be worse later. It is a vicious cycle that you can only get out of by telling the truth. I hope Wes does it soon.
On the other hand, I was very surprised that the criminal who is blackmailing Wes is involved in large-scale contract killings, that is, I thought he was just a small-time criminal but I think there is much more there than we know.
I like that they show this side of Angela. She loves her job and wants to return but feels this apprehension, this fear and this guilt of leaving her little kid in someone else’s hands so shortly after birth. It is a real problem that we don’t see reflected in shows or movies and I love that they are exploring this with Angela and I like that she, inevitably, cannot stop doing her job because it is part of who she is. She is going to learn to put it all together, she just needs some time.
The end of The Rookie 4×03 “In the Line of Fire” leaves us with goosebumps. The team must face a serial killer who will surely give them more than one headache. This seems to be the plot of the season so I don’t expect it to be resolved until much later and I’m crossing fingers from now on for everything to go well.
And here ends our The Rookie review. We will be back next week with a new one!
