The official Criminal Minds: Evolution trailer dropped recently, and we’re definitely in. It hasn’t even been that long since the original show ended. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t missed everyone from the BAU in the just over two years since the Criminal Minds series finale.
With that being said, it’s not exactly like the subject matter was ever easy to stomach, so you’d think we’d need to brace ourselves before digging back in. But you’d be wrong. As it turns out, we’re more than ready for this show. And our biggest takeaway from the trailer is how much we identify with Penelope Garcia. “Gah! I hate how easy it is to pick this back up” indeed.
Add in the bonus moment where she just gives Rossi a look when he asks if she needs his password or anything — like, does he forget how Garcia got her gig with the FBI in the first place? Because we don’t — and we’ve seriously never identified with her more.
…which is saying a lot, actually, considering how much she was always a favorite.
While we’re definitely excited to see all our returning favorites, like Kirsten Vangsness as Garcia and Paget Brewster as (a gray-haired!) Emily Prentiss, and…basically everyone else, we’re also pretty intrigued by some of the new elements in this Criminal Minds revival, too. Surprisingly enough for a well-known procedural, we’re actually looking forward to…the plot?
If you’ve been around since the beginning — and suffered the horrible loss of the CM ladies somewhere along the way, only to thankfully get them back — you pretty much know what the show’s all about. But the revived series has a little bit of a twist.
Here’s the official Criminal Minds: Evolution synopsis:

“In CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION, the FBI’s elite team of criminal profilers come up against their greatest threat yet, an UnSub who has used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers. As the world opens back up and the network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time.”
To be honest, the whole, “blame the pandemic” bit is a bit iffy…
But, then again, it’s not exactly as if UnSubs would’ve been sticking to the bread-baking trend of the week during the five minutes of supposed lockdowns when normals pretended to care, so…
Technically, it kind of makes a sick sort of sense. Not to mention, it’s a pretty believable explanation for why the BAU is back so soon.
