Transformers: Rise of the Beasts just dropped an official trailer and it actually looks kind of good.
Based on Beast Wars: Transformers, the Saturday morning Fox Kids show from the 1990’s, it tells the story of the Maximals. These aren’t your friendly Autobots or the villainous Decepticons. And they don’t turn into cars, jets, or trucks. They turn into animals; a gorilla, a cheetah, a peregrine falcon, and a rhino to be precise. According to Director Steven Caple Jr. they are “prehistoric animals who travel through time and space who arrive on earth.”
And as ridiculous as it sounds (the giant gorilla Transformer known as Optimus Primal is voiced by Ron Perlman) and it looks (did you see the detail on that robo-gorilla?!)…I’m actually really intrigued by this.
The ridiculous, over-the-top, yet grounded feeling of this franchise has been lost for the last couple of Transformers movies. So much so that I’ve started watching them and just turned it off, disappointed at what I was seeing. Except for Bumblebee. That movie was perfect and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts seems to be trusting in its audience to accept the ridiculous and have fun with it while telling an intergalactic story of war, with plenty of battles to come.
So, yes. I’m going to watch this movie. For Anthony Ramos, because it’s cool to see a Latino lead in anything. But mainly for the Maximals. I need to see their glory on the big screen. In Imax. Also, if the Maximals are possible in this franchise…what’s stopping a Fast & Furious crossover? Just saying. If they can go to space, I think they could bond with Transformers, ride fast cars, and save the plant from it’s next intergalactic war.
