The idea of Meet Cute is simple – sometimes, we want something to listen to our rom-coms, not watch. Whether that is because we like the escape as we do our chores, or because we want to sit down at the end of a long day, just close our eyes, and get lost in the fluff, the truth is that we are absolutely in for what Meet Cute has to offer. And their newest series, Sexy Island, which has two episodes out …might just be our favorite thing we’ve seen (nay, heard) from them.
On the surface, it’s messy. Reality TV always makes for mess, in “reality” or in fiction. But Sexy Island is never really pretending otherwise. In fact, the series seems to be taking advantage of our preconceived notions to deliver not just a fun and entertaining listen, but some romance we want to root for too.
Plus, there’s a twist too! Or, two. Not the typical people are awful kind of twist, either, though there’s also some fun exploration of what it means to be a reality tv “villain” and how other people’s perceptions can affect the way we see ourselves, and the way we act in general.
But more importantly, there are two people finding a connection, in a story told in a way that sometimes had me stopping in my tracks to play the last minute again, just as if I were rewatching my favorite scene from a show that has caught my attention. And if the rest of the time I was just nodding and smiling along as I got other things done, then that isn’t a bad thing – in fact, it pretty much makes Sexy Island the perfect listen.
In case you need it to convince you, here’s a synopsis for the series:
Welcome to Sexy Island, where beautiful reality TV contestants find love on a remote exotic beach. Our hero, Bryce, is a beefcake accountant and former star of Count On Love, where he chose a wife based solely on reviewing her taxes. His goofball charm won the heart of audiences everywhere, but after a public, messy divorce, his publicity team have convinced Bryce to join the cast of Sexy Island to “revive his brand.” On the beach, Bryce is quick to notice Gwen, the “super villain” of Hot Swirl Summer, and the salty, sultry seductress America loves to hate. But there’s more to Gwen than meets the eye. She’s at a crossroads in her life and doesn’t know which to pursue: her PhD, or infamy? Slowly, Bryce begins to suspect something is amiss on the island. He’s walked the perimeter several times, so why hasn’t he ever seen or heard a single plane or a boat taking away the eliminated contestants? And doesn’t Gwen think their producer is acting a little… weird? Bryce barely has time to sort through his feelings for Gwen, because in the midst of hot hook ups, “extreme trust falls” and scavenger hunts, Bryce makes a discovery: their host, Chuck, has gone rogue and intends to keep them all here forever. Bryce and Gwen are faced with a choice: will they stay and live in blissful ignorance on Sexy Island or will they unite, rebel, and escape in the name of “the right reasons?” Sexy Island is Bachelor in Paradise meets The Lost City with a Truman Show twist.
