Like a lot of us, I’ve played Gran Turismo since I was a kid. Did I know what I was doing? No. Did I crash all the time? Absolutely. But I had fun, picked a nice car, and trash-talked with friends and family. It was a community activity. I just didn’t realize how much of a community it really was until I watched the trailer for Sony Pictures Gran Turismo. And guys, it actually looks good.
Starring Archie Madekwe, it tells the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough. He was one of more than 90,000 people who participated in the GT Academy in 2011. Basically, he competed in online trials to see if he had what it took to transition into a real-life racing career with Nissan. And he made it. It wasn’t easy but he trained, worked hard, and actually became a race car driver. And according to Gran Turismo, his dream is to race in Formula 1 aka the highest international racing competition.
And here I thought I was just watching a movie with David Harbour and Orlando Bloom. Which, the Harbour we got was fantastic and it’s giving Hopper’s estranged but famous cousin or something. I know the timelines don’t match up to 2023 but work with me here! Also, work with me here when it comes to seeing more of Bloom. He hasn’t been in a good-looking movie for a while, which this one is giving. Here’s hoping they both race each other, that this movie uplifts Madekwe, and that more nerds (like me) realize they can make even a dream like this come true.
