What books made you fall in love with reading? When it comes to us, we can all trace it back to a certain book that gave us certain feelings that made us never want to have it end.
But all things end. It’s a fact of life. Well, it was a fact of life, until fan fiction became all of the rage and we all fell in love with Wattpad, AO3, and Fanfiction.net.
Over the years, we’ve started to beyond the reading of just fan fiction and really appreciate all of the things that Wattpad has to offer. It’s such a great website with so many different writers that deserve a chance to have their stories read.
And their voices heard.
One book that we’d loved so much has been Hazel Fine Sings Along, by Katie Wicks. The book is Katie Wicks debut novel and is absolutely adorable. It’s an original book from the debut author, who is from Montreal, Canada.
The book, which was released under the W by Wattpad Books banner, is about, “Hazel Fine steps out of her crummy hotel room into the bright LA sunshine, she knows she’s got one, and only one, chance.. Her audition for the massive talent show, The Sing Along, could change her life forever. She has the skills, what she needs now is a bit of luck.
Soon Hazel finds herself alongside fifteen other contestants who all have the same dream: superstardom. There’s the beautiful Hollywood golden child, Bella. The bright, bubbly country singer, Zoey. The extraordinarily handsome surfer/influencer, Benji. And Hazel, who has more to hide than her past. She’s got the chops, but can she handle the pressure without self-combusting?
Add in an undeniable attraction to the show’s talented yet brooding musical director, Nick, and the lecherous tactics of one of the judges, Hazel soon finds herself in over her head. But with her guitar strapped to her shoulder, she’s going to sing her heart out—and maybe open herself up to love at the same time. Who says you can’t have it all . . . “
We sat down and spoke with Katie about her book, the writing process, and hoping to get to know her a little better.

Tell us a little bit about your writing process. What are your essentials that you need to write?
A: I can and do write anywhere and everywhere. I don’t need anything other than my laptop. I try to do two writing sessions a day—one in the morning, where I do big thinking, complicated parts; and one in the afternoon, which requires less brainwork.
How do you come up with your ideas for a book? Are you an outliner? Or do you just write?
A: I almost always get the premise first and then think through a broad outline of the plot and then go to character. So I’m not a formal outliner, but I do know where I’m going.
What is the hardest part of writing a book? When you are writing on Wattpad, how essential is the readers’ feedback to what you are writing? They say never read the comments, but do you?
A: The middle is always the hardest! I like getting the feedback as I write for sure. You’re not supposed to read the comments?? Oops.
Tell us about your book and the inspiration behind it?
A: Hazel Fine Sings Along is about a young woman who goes on a singing competition to kick start her career. But she has a secret which might keep her dreams from coming true. I’ve always loved singing competitions so when I decided to write a rom-com, I thought it would be a good setting.

An amateur guitar and tennis player, Katie has been obsessed with reality TV singing competitions since American Idol debuted twenty-years ago, but has never worked up the courage to audition herself.
