If there’s anything that we know about Doctor Who it’s that it knows how to pull at the heartstrings. No matter if your favorite Doctor was 10 or 12, there is pain and loss that comes with living as long as The Doctor does. And there’s something about the official trailer for season 14 of the timeless series with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson that feels like it’s going to rip out our hearts. Of course, after making us fall in love with this Doctor and his companion Ruby.
In the official trailer, David Bowie’s “Changes” manages to set the stage on the light, love, and adventure that this show is known for. We get to see The Doctor invite Ruby to travel with him to see dinosaurs, go back to the Regency era, and explore the far reaches of the galaxy. But simmering beneath all of that is sadness and pain. You see it in the small moment when Ruby’s mom asks The Doctor to take care of Ruby or when The Doctor screams out of the Tardis. Even Ruby talking about finding purpose in her life, I feel like I’m preparing for her loss.
While many fans are still divided about the new Doctor (this always happens when a favorite Doctor is out and a new one is in), there’s something about Gatwa’s Doctor that reminds me of David Tennant‘s run. The 10th Doctor was the one who made me love this world and his time with Rose Tyler and Donna Noble changed me. I can see the same energy that Tennant brought to The Doctor in Gatwa. And I can see the same love for adventure, hope, and strength inside of Rose and Donna in Ruby. I just hope she makes it out of this alive and that The Doctor catches a break. One can only take so much pain.
