This year’s Super Bowl may have been less exciting than most expected between two great teams with history, but regardless of that, the Super Bowl LIX commercials kept a lot of us watching until the end. They’ve always been a big part of why people watch the event. The world’s biggest brands, film and media distributors, and companies use this night of mass obedience to only keep the television on one channel to show us why we should use, watch, or support their messages.
From reunions of actors from movies that we remember as classics, to funny skits that tell us which foods to buy, to movie trailers of the next summer blockbusters, all the way to promotions of media that had us laughing or smiling big – we’re giving you our top seven favorite Super Bowl 59 commercials from yesterday’s game on FOX.
When Sally Met Hellman’s
Was it a little surprising to see these two actors reunite 34 years later for a commercial about mayonnaise out of all things? Sure. We would’ve picked something outwardly more romantic like…celebrating New Year’s Eve in a big ballroom. I didn’t mean for our hopeless romantic side to jump the fence here but come on, the ending of When Harry Met Sally is what everyone quotes as easily as the alphabet.
In Hellman’s recreation of the iconic Katz Deli scene where Sally eats a sandwich so good that she pretends to have an orgasm, we’re reminded of why the film is such a gem. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s chemistry and playful banter are just as good as it was in the film. We loved seeing them get back together for this!
Glen Powell’s RAM Truck Commercial
In this year’s RAM Truck commercial, Glen Powell promotes three new models of the car in a cute skit of telling the Goldilocks and The Three Bears fairytale to his real-life niece and nephew.
It’s full of humor and perfect comedic timing. From jumping on beds and obnoxiously picking at porridge to speeding down empty roads, Glen shines in his usual charismatic ways. It holds heart in the playful banter he has with his family when they break away from the fictional tale. RAM was smart in using one of Hollywood’s biggest and most beloved actors right now to promote their new releases during the Super Bowl, we’ll give them that.
Nike’s Women’s Sports Commercial: “So, Win”
In Nike’s historic commercial that solely focuses on women’s sports, they highlight female athletes such as Caitlyn Clark, Jordan Chiles, Sha’carri Richardson, and Aryna Sabalenka, just to name a few. With a passionate monologue narrated by singer Doechii, Nike sends a strong and heartfelt message: Do what people believe women couldn’t do in the sport in the past. The female athletes in the commercial are defying the odds in proudly proving haters wrong.
A few lines stand out to us: You can’t put yourself first so! put yourself first. You can’t be confident so! be confident. You can’t dominate so! dominate. You can’t fill a stadium so…fill that stadium! Nike left us feeling empowered and we loved every second of it.
Ritz Salty Club
The poster in Ritz’ Salty Club may have said No Smiles Allowed but as soon as we saw Bad Bunny do just that, we broke the rules alongside him. It was a funny commercial that highlighted the irony of the cracker’s delicious taste of salt in the creation of a private club made up of salty people. Aubrey Plaza and Michael Shannon play characters that experience joy only when they bite into the cracker because it tastes so good that they can’t get upset at it.
We get it. We also love it when a good snack lifts our mood.
Haagen Dazs “Not So Fast, Not So Furious”
Although it’s not canon in the Fast and the Furious franchise as it stands as a commercial to promote ice cream, it was a sweet sight to see this couple get some peace to enjoy something together. Letty and Dom’s lives are naturally so chaotic in the franchise so it made us smile to think they could enjoy domesticity like this if they were able to.
We enjoyed this one for what it gave us: a moment to break away from the narrative these two live in in the films. (Plus, the ice cream looked delicious and now we want some).
The ULTRA Hustle: Michelob Ultra
Now, this was a cinematic experience. It felt like we were watching a movie in sixty seconds. Catherine O’Hara and Willem Dafoe played an older tennis duo disguised as pros against multiple younger teams only when Michelob ULTRA beer was offered as their winning prize. It’s funny and has you laughing as soon as Dafoe gets into stance to set the ball on the court.
We’d expect nothing less of great when you put two experienced actors together who know what they’re doing. This commercial had us invested in the storytelling from start to finish. We didn’t look away once and that’s the truth.
Coor’s Light: Slow Monday
Don’t we all feel sluggish and unmotivated to get our brains working on a Monday morning? I’m sure most of us are feeling that way today. In this new Coors Light commercial, a sloth moves at a slow pace to get through a typical workday. It was relatable to every adult watching and made us laugh multiple times.
When it turns out that the sloth turns into a young man once he gets a new case of beer in a grocery order after getting home from work, we see what Coors Light is trying to tell us. You won’t be able to function like yourself without a beer in the afternoon on a hard day.
Which could be true. However, we’d just advise that you go for the water instead to stay hydrated today if you had a hard night.
