Prime Video is officially inviting us to the Sinclair family’s private island, and the vibes are as deceptive as they are dreamy. We Were Liars‘ first-look images from the upcoming Prime Video limited series adaptation of E. Lockhart’s YA bestselling book have just been released. They’re swimming in sunshine, mystery, and silent heartbreak. The eight-episode limited series launches with all episodes on June 18, 2025, streaming in 240+ countries and territories on Prime Video.
Centered in the story is Cadence Sinclair Eastman, who Gossip Girl starlet Emily Alyn Lind will play. Cadence returns to her family’s New England island estate—a rich playground to hide emotional wreckage—after a traumatic accident. Alongside her are the Liars: Gat Patil (played by Shubham Maheshwari), Mirren Sinclair Sheffield (Esther McGregor), and Johnny Sinclair Dennis (Joseph Zada).
But nothing is what it seems. “Everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide,” reads the show’s official synopsis.
Produced by Universal Television and helmed by co-showrunners Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and Carina Adly MacKenzie (Roswell, New Mexico), We Were Liars promises psychological plotlines and relatable teen emotions. And if you’ve read the book, you know the twist cuts deep.
We Were Liars feels like this summer’s Pretty Little Liars meets Big Little Lies, but why?

From the minds of genre powerhouses Plec and MacKenzie, We Were Liars is shaping up to be a prestige YA drama with haunting layers. What sets it apart isn’t just the dreamy visuals (thanks to cinematographer Jessie Redmond) or the luxe coastal aesthetic, but the secrets lurking beneath the surface.
As seen in the first look, the show mirrors the “American royalty” aura of the Sinclair family with sun-soaked shots that feel almost too good to be true. And that’s the point. Lockhart’s novel builds suspense through Cadence’s broken memories, and the series wants to stay faithful to the unreliable narrator.
In an industry crowded with book-to-screen YA adaptations, this one stands out. According to Variety, it’s “a vibrant summer getaway — and some unanswered questions.”
With a supporting cast that includes Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Caitlin FitzGerald, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse, this can be a generational reckoning.

What do the first-look images tell us about the island (and the lies)?
If pictures could whisper, the first-look stills from Prime Video would murmur, “Not all is well.” From group shots that radiate summer nostalgia to frames of Cadence staring out to sea, the show hints at a slow unpacking. Each shot’s curated to echo the book’s themes: money, loneliness, memory, and loss.

Prime Video describes it best: “One island, four friends, and countless lies—nothing is as it appears.” That tagline alone confirms that the series will lean heavily into the novel’s fractured timeline and psychological layers. We’re not just watching a girl come of age—we’re watching her piece together a reality no one wants her to remember.
So, We Were Liars fans, mark your calendars for June 18. The secrets of Sinclair Island are finally ready to surface.
