After the new things we saw at SDCC 2025, we’re all wondering what’s next for Chenford in The Rookie Season 8. Will their different shifts drive them apart or will they be able to have THE conversation? Time to break it down.
What’s Next for Chenford?
During the SDCC panel, Alexi Hawley didn’t give too many details about Chenford. However, he did acknowledge that they didn’t want the breakup between them to feel too rushed or something they did for the sake of it. Their intention was for both Lucy and Tim to have stories to tell and grow independently before getting back together. According to Hawley, it was easy to get them back together without really addressing the issues in their relationship. But he didn’t want that and he’s aware that no one else did.
So they tried to create a path back to each other that, while not linear, would involve change. Whether or not it succeeded is a debate for another day. But the point is that they were clear that Chenford needed to grow independently to become a couple again. Now, on the cusp of The Rookie Season 8, they’ve already done it. They just need to have THE conversation.
If you remember how The Rookie Season 7 Episode 18 ended, in the final minutes of the episode, Chenford was having that conversation, Tim was opening up, pouring his heart out to Lucy, only to realize she was asleep the whole time. And that was incredibly frustrating. Hawley is aware of this and confirmed that in Season 8, they would have that much-needed adult conversation about their relationship. What we don’t know is exactly when. But we’re happy knowing they will have it…for now.
But having that conversation may not be enough.

Breaking Patterns and Moving Forward
Although Chenford has grown since their breakup, the two will have to fight to avoid repeating the patterns that got them there in the first place. And not only that. After Lucy became a Sergeant, that left them on different shifts. Tim takes the day shift while Lucy takes the night shift. Quite incompatible schedules for a relationship. However, luckily, in an interview with Collider, Hawley made it clear that this obstacle wouldn’t last too long and wouldn’t be insurmountable for Chenford.
So, could Metro Tim return in The Rookie Season 8? It could be a possibility. However, Hawley also hinted that in Season 8, Lucy would return as an undercover agent. Perhaps it’s a long assignment, and that justifies her no longer being on night shift? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Now, after the conversation and the shift change, there’s something else hanging in the balance for Chenford.
During his speech at the end of Season 7, Tim asked Lucy to move in with him. Will he ask her again? What will Lucy say? On the one hand, their relationship was too important for them to feel ready to take it a step further. But on the other hand, in a situation where they’ve just gotten back together and have to figure out how to apply their personal growth to their relationship, would it be too much to add living together to the mix?
Only time will tell. But for us, the question isn’t if Chenford will move in together, but when.
The Rookie Season 8 will premiere in 2026 on ABC.
