K-pop is now part of the general pop culture. We’d argue it was before, but now it definitely is. Don’t believe us? Just look at the number of people watching KPop Demon Hunters over and over again on Netflix. (It’s us. We are people. We can’t get those songs out of our heads.)
And if you’re looking for your next K-pop obsession, we’ve got a suggestion: Mission K-Pop, a new documentary podcast series from USG Audio, Novel, and PRX that explores the world of K-pop through the eyes of one aspiring star. The podcast is set to launch on October 13.
Mission K-Pop follows 23-year-old Caty Szeto, who leaves her life in Los Angeles to train at a K-Pop academy in Seoul. “Guided by celebrated journalist Haeryun Kang (Rolling Stone, Blackpink cover story), the eight-part series captures Caty’s thrilling pursuit of her dream as well as the singing, dancing, styling, and high-stakes auditions that could make her the next global idol. Along the way, she confronts the exhilarating highs and sobering realities of the industry.”
“I’ve covered K-pop for many years. It was astounding to see how far the K-pop dream had spread all over the world, to someone like Caty,” said host Haeryun Kang. “As a first-gen K-pop fan myself, I saw glimpses of my own childhood in Caty’s love of K-pop. I hope audiences can also connect to that daring joy of falling in love with a dream.”
Think of it like a documentary about K-pop that you can listen to on your commute or during your workout. And one that will give you a lot more knowledge about the world of K-pop! Sound good, right?
Well, we’ve got something that sounds even better. We’re bringing you a first listen to the trailer for Mission K-Pop. We think you’re going to be as obsessed about this as we already are.
