We were patiently waiting for the renewal of FX’s Adults, and the time has finally come! Season 2 is officially confirmed, which means we’ll be seeing more of Samir (Malik Elassal), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), Issa (Amita Rao), and Anton (Owen Thiele). Returning as co-creators, writers, and executive producers are Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw. Both were previously known for their work on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Their creative team remains the same in network comedic veterans Nick Kroll, Stefani Robinson, Sarah Naftalis, and Jonathan Krisel.
Throughout Season 1, we laughed and found many current trends to point out. We also found the unwavering love in this group to be relatable to our own friendships. But we’d like the narrative to dig deeper in Season 2. The series depended and delivered a lot on comedic quirks and actions, which we expected going into it. While they succeeded in getting us to enjoy half-hour glimpses into their chaotic lives, other things fell flat.
For us, truly caring about these characters didn’t happen until the end of the season. Lucy hooking up with one of her old teachers taught us a lesson about adulthood. Nobody has their life perfected at any age. Therefore, we couldn’t expect a perfected balance off the bat. Now, the show has more time to find its exact footing and bring us closer to the group. Season 2 of FX’s Adults is coming, and here’s what we’d want to see happen!

Character Building

Adulting is hard, but especially when you’re young and don’t feel like you should be one. Mistakes and regrets will happen, but so will the pockets of joy. In particular, it’s special to find such a connection in life. If you succeed, it becomes important to hold onto people who want to stand in both the mess and beauty of life with you. Because those are the type of people who will love and support you through anything. Such a lesson is what Adults has done well so far in giving audiences.
The show slowly uncovered who and what made these people who they were, but it wasn’t done gradually over time. Rather, it was sprinkled into the narrative without a strong focus. So, we’d like more storylines diving deep into who these characters are and why the group fits so well in Season 2. Because Season 1, Episode 8 ‘The Mail’ was the closest balance between comedy and heartfelt moments the show had. The group cared openly and deeply about Jack, enough for both Issa to heavily consider marrying him so he could keep his visa and Anton to do it instead.
While it was Lucy who began treating life like a party, we saw Issa worry over her autonomy and future for the first time. We got to see the group be vulnerable with each other. Their fears, aspirations, and worries about life in general came to light. So yes, we’d love to see more of the calm nights with the group eating cake and being happy. Along with character-centered episodes where the focus is on someone, we can learn more about their past and what shaped them. We already got a taste with themes of self-doubt, confidence, and fear of abandonment in Lucy, Jack, and Anton’s storylines in Season 1.
As an audience, we can appreciate the escapism that comedic shows provide. But, there are some real hard-hitting themes that Adults can fully explore in Season 2 with everyone. We want to connect with these characters as individuals who have feelings, not just as people who make us laugh.
Exploring The Love Triangle

We’ll be the first to say that Lucy doesn’t need to be dating anyone new. Especially after the intense crash and burn with her old high school teacher, played by Daredevil’s Charlie Cox. She needs to rediscover her purpose in life and improve her happiness first.
Samir is in the same boat, as we believe his pursuit of a career is important to him. If he’s able to get a job he really wants, we believe his awkwardness with women will naturally improve. Naturally, with Lucy and Samir taken care of, we have to address the obvious. There’s a possible love triangle between Issa, Jack, and Anton. And we need to see it happen.
If you were paying close attention in the finale, you’d notice how close Anton and Jack were sitting on the sofa and how real their kiss looked. Although their marriage was real to the court, it’s “fake” to their friends and each other. Jack is currently dating Issa. And it doesn’t matter if it’s casual, they’re cute together and care about each other. She was the one who introduced Jack and Anton, who became close friends quickly. Yet, after the guys’ wedding, their affection looked too natural, making it seem like they’re the ones that belong together.
Which could make things incredibly difficult for this trio of friends, specifically. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t want to see a love triangle unfold because we do. Fate and true love cannot lie. There’s someone that’s going to get hurt, and relationships will probably be tested, but it’s to be expected. Life is never easy or always pretty, and neither is love when it can tear a friendship apart. That’s a hard truth to adulthood this group hasn’t explored yet, so give it to us!
