Cryptids. Art that screams, “I’m a little dead inside but we’re making due.” And actual quality materials. Believe it or not, that’s what we felt like we found with Unstable Games.
As an avid gamer myself, I was intrigued when Unstable Games reached out and asked if we wanted to check out some of their games. As a millennial I’m always looking for distraction from an ever spiraling world. It’s even better when the games shy away from the basic uniformity you see with most games that scream cheap and produced by the millions.

Also, each game feels like it was handcrafted by someone on the edge of an existential crisis. That’s the sweet spot.
While Unstable Games sent us three games (Garden Variety, Happy Little Dinosaurs, and Twisted Cryptids) we wanted to focus on the latter game. Twisted Cryptids is a strategy game sees you navigate a love-hate relationship with humans while trying to outwit your fellow cryptids. These include Bigfoot, the Jackalope, the Loveland Frog, and Mothman.
As a fellow owner of the book I’m in Love with Mothman, this one was right up my alley. But that isn’t even the best part.

Twisted Cryptids comes in a slip on case that is holographic. As you tip the game back and forth, the crytids go from hiding in the forest to being visible. Also, nothing in the game feels cheap. I come from the Monopoly and Candy Land days of gaming. And I would destroy those games from simple rough housing. These cards, boards, and even the player pieces can take a beating because it’s sturdy and quality materials.
Finally, there’s the art. While flipping through all the cards for Twisted Cryptids and Happy Little Dinosaurs, there was a certain look in those eyes. A look that screamed, “Oh, I’m fine.” while the world is burning. And you’re not fine. As a fellow millennial, I’m not fine. But I’m still. I’m still vibing. And we’re going to make due with what we got. That’s the vibe that I get from Unstable Games, from the cryptids to the dinosaur on the front of Happy Little Dinosaurs with the caption “Smile It’s Almost Over.”

So if you’re looking for something original, fun, and that will bring a smile to the millennial in your life who is just trying to make it through the next crisis, these games might for you! Also, for that monster lover in your life, you know what to get them. You know what I’m talking about.
