Stories about love are often very similar. Part of it is that, even for longer stories, they only capture a moment in time. And love changes, for better or worse. It evolves. It sometimes even turns us into different people. Enter MUBI’s The New Years, from César Award-winning director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts), a different way to look at life, love and what binds us together as people.
The Spanish-language series follows Ana (Iria Del Río – Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End) and Óscar (Francesco Carril – Three Goodbyes) from their first meeting, on the night they both turn thirty, through ten New Year’s Eves. Ana lives in a shared flat, dislikes her job, and changes friends frequently. Óscar is a doctor with his life sorted—until they meet and fall in love.
The show spans ten consecutive years, with each episode capturing a single night that reveals how love evolves and offers an honest examination of modern commitment and choosing someone, year after year.
The synopsis for the sixth episode of the show, which will be available on January 1st, 2021, reads as follows: “Following a chaotic New Year’s Day shift at a Madrid hospital amid the COVID surge, Óscar avoids going home and ends up at an illegal party. Óscar’s evening unexpectedly shifts when he helps a wounded stranger.”
