Mafia stories are something that we’ve been watching more and more of lately. We aren’t really sure why, but there is something about a mafia story that gives us pause. Maybe it’s the bad boy trope and maybe it is the dark romance. All we can say for sure is that we stop and take pause when watching.
Bound by Honor premiered on ReelShort in 2025, but lately we do see that it is a show that people can’t stop watching and talking about. The show is filled with chaos, an arranged marriage, and a man that is going to have to find the road to redemption. The series is an adaptation of Cora Reilly’s book, and if we’re being honest, we had to stop and take a second to decide if we were going to watch. In the book, the main character of Aria was married off at 15 and we could not get down with that.
If you are a fan of the book, you should know that the adaptation is quite different. There aren’t as many characters, the story is streamlined, and it’s not as chaotic as the book. It focuses more on the romance than anything else.
And don’t get us wrong, Aria and Luca’s marriage is toxic. He’s quite manipulative and gaslit’s her a lot. Luca is a mob boss that is feared and he’s known to be quite brutal. But, he knows that Aria is young and he does try to give her time to adjust to being married and to find the want to have sex with him.
Aria has been sheltered and she’s used to being protected by her father – who heads up a rival mafia family. She marries Luca to save her sister from having to marry him. She has to grow quickly from her sheltered life to being a woman that supports her husband, no matter what. She has to learn the rules of being the lady of the house and how to best be there for her husband.
There are a lot of misunderstandings and jealousy, but ultimately the two are working towards a relationship that is based on trust, respect, and love. There is the tug of war in both of them – the pull between their loyalties and their new life together. Luca and Aria were all over the place, but they both knew the stakes of their marriage.
Bound by Honor is 94 episodes – one of the longer verticals that we’ve watched. You’re probably asking yourself if should you watch it. We’re here to tell you why you should.
IT’S A BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION
People may not realize that verticals do adapt books. However, they do and this is one of those. An adaptation to a vertical does feel really different, but that isn’t such a bad thing. One thing that you will realize quickly is that adaptations to this medium is quite different than TV or Film. The characters are streamlined, the story is streamlined and there is more of a focus on the main characters.
While we’d be the first to admit that we do miss some characters in a vertical adaptation, we can respect the choices that were made to streamline the story. The seriesfeels like a full fledged cinematic experience – it’s just on your phone.
THE CASTING IS DONE WELL
Chemistry is important. A lot of the times it does make or break a production. Rhett Wellington and Savannah Coffee have on screen chemistry. There is enough of that push and pull that makes you want to root for them, but also screams for both of them to move on.
There are a lot of times in verticals that it feels like the cast is only there because they paid for a role. This one doesn’t feel like that. This one feels like they took a story and invested in a franchise versus the short game.

THE STORY ARC IS CONSTANTLY MOVING FORWARD
Though the majority of the series is about Luca wanting Aria to give in to sleeping with him. But for some reason it works and flows. He continuously tells her that he’s not a dangerous monster, but he sure is a horny one.
Even with the storyline being about sex a lot – it is also about the evolution of Aria and Luca’s relationship. She’s breaking down his walls and showing him that he can be a softer person and still be in charge. He’s making her a stronger person and more resilient.
The story is toxic – that is a fact. But like anything, you know it is fictitious and so you should take yourself out of that and see that it is entertainment and is a story about the mafia and the world that they grew up in, but finding love in that world.
THE ROMANCE
One of the hardest things to portray – at least it seems this way – is dark romance. This one definitely fits the dark romance role and if you are a fan of that type of romance, this one fits. I think that a lot of us buy into mafia romances, because of the whole bad boy angle. It’s the whole falling for the bad boy and hoping you can fix him thing. We all experience it. We fall for it.
If you like a mafia romance, you’ll definitely love this one. It is dark and steamy. It’s sexy.

CONSENT & THE RULE OF NOT HURTING WOMEN
We first loved that the aged up Aria to make sure that she was of the age of consent.
One thing that we respect here that we appreciate is the wedding night. There is an expectation from the two families that they will consummate their marriage, but Luca knows that she isn’t ready. He’s not going to take anything from her that she’s not willing to give. He wants her consent for sex – even though over the series he’s so rude and downright a jerk about it. He’s not exactly the most romantic person, but I can appreciate that he didn’t take. He waited for her to be ready.
Luca isn’t the nicest person, however on their wedding day, he protected her from the families that were outside the door to make sure that they consummated their marriage. We can respect that because it set up some sort of possibility of trust for the viewer, thinking that he can be redeemable and he’s not a monster.
Following the success of Bound by Honor, the cast will reunite for the second book adaptation with Cora Reilly, Bound by Love, continuing their collaboration and building this into a franchise.
As The Hollywood Reporter predicted for 2026, ReelShort is entering a significant expansion phase, broadening their drama offerings and diversifying their genre slate. Micro-dramas are booming not only in scale, but also in creativity and long-term potential. The category has already evolved to include high-profile book adaptations, including Reilly’s work as well as the book adaptation of Vicious.
ReelShort is also moving into new genres, including high-concept sci-fi, action thrillers, and elevated fantasy, alongside titles such as American Sniper: The Last Round, their latest release and a hit and the Navy-themed drama Callsign: Legacy.
