Eternally Yours is almost here! There’s something funny about the idea of being married to the same person for 500 years, especially when the only thing standing between you and divorce is…vampire law. So yeah, we’re excited to know this very unusual undead family. So here’re 5 things we hope to see in Eternally Yours.
The Reality of a 500-Year Marriage
Let’s be honest, the 500-year marriage is one of the things we need Eternally Yours to really have fun with. Charles and Liz have been together since 1526, and while that sounds romantic, we cannot imagine spending five centuries with the same person without eventually getting annoyed by absolutely everything they do. And because vampire law apparently forbids divorce, there is no easy escape hatch here. They are stuck with each other. Forever. Literally.
That gives the show so much room for the kind of mundane, ridiculous marital comedy that we love. We want the arguments that have nothing to do with being vampires and everything to do with being married for an absurd amount of time. And we want Charles and Liz to know exactly how to push each other’s buttons.
The “Human Boyfriend” Culture Clash
Max being human in a secretive, centuries-old vampire household is so promising! Max is Emma’s human boyfriend who suddenly has to figure out how to fit into a family whose idea of normal has been shaped by hundreds of years of being undead. And somehow, we have a feeling that introductions are not going to go smoothly.
Charles and Liz, have spent centuries living by their own rules. Max, meanwhile, is coming into that world as a regular human being who has to navigate a family dynamic that is anything but regular. There is so much potential in watching him try to understand what is happening around him while also trying to make a good impression.
Those Quirky Coven Dynamics We Love From Ghosts
We are obviously going to be thinking about Ghosts when we watch Eternally Yours, and that is not a bad thing. Joe Port and Joe Wiseman created the kind of comedy that made a house full of very different ghosts work so well, and now they are bringing that to a group of vampires in modern-day Seattle. We want that same sense of quirky personalities bouncing off each other—just with more blood.
The premise gives the show a completely different world, and we hope Eternally Yoursdevelops its own identity while still giving us the kind of character-driven, fast-moving humor that made us fall in love with Ghosts. We do not need it to be Ghosts with vampires. We just want that same spark to be there.
More Unknowing Human Spouses in the Coven
If Max being the human boyfriend is already going to create chaos, we need to see more of the humans who have somehow ended up around this vampire family without knowing the whole story. Jesse’s unknowing human wife, Phyllis is exactly the kind of character we hope Eternally Yours uses.
Because how do you spend your life around vampires and simply… not know? Phyllis also gives the show another way to explore the contrast between the vampires’ world and the humans around them. Max knows what he is getting into, at least to some extent, but Phyllis doesn’t. That opens the door for misunderstandings, close calls and the kind of situations where we are sitting there waiting for someone to realize what is actually happening.
A Potential Ghosts Crossover Event
Okay, we have to talk about it. A Ghosts crossover would be awesome! We know Eternally Yours and Ghosts come from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, so we are going to start wondering whether there is room for some kind of connection. Even if a full crossover is not possible, we would happily take fun nods, Easter eggs or little references. But if the opportunity ever comes up for the actual worlds to collide? We’re so IN!
