Supergirl: How Tyler Hoechlin became Superman

What’s it like taking on the storied mantle of Superman? How did Tyler Hoechlin even land the role?

Much more easily than we previously thought.

As reported in Entertainment Weekly, Hoechlin’s turn as Superman might have us all abuzz, but he didn’t have to go through a lengthy and grueling audition process to get the role, no. He was just …well, lucky to be in the right place, at the right time and fit the idea executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg had of what they wanted in Superman.

“There wasn’t an audition,” Hoechlin revealed to EW.  “I had a great meeting with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. Halfway through, they brought up the idea of introducing Superman to the show and asked if I’d be interested. I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely. I’m obviously a fan.’ I believe that was on a Monday. On Friday, we got a call with the offer, so it was very quick. It was very flattering, and I wish every job came about that way.”

Funny the way things work out.

Clark Kent, aka Kal-El, is expected to make his debut in the season premiere of Supergirl, and though we already know everything – and nothing, about the character Hoechlin is going to play, it does seem like they’re trying to stick to the spirit of Superman in this new incantation.

It also seems like they’re trying to respect the fact that this is about Supergirl, not Superman. And we can certainly get behind that idea.

Supergirl returns Monday, October 10th at 8/7c on the CW.
