We were excited for The Gifted before San Diego Comic-Con, we were, it was just a superficial sense of excitement for the concept, not a real concrete sense of OMG I WANT THIS NOW.
Now, however, after having screened half the episode and gotten to interview the cast we’re full on excited. We’re on board. We’re counting the days till October 2nd.
Among the cast members we got to talk to at San Diego Comic Con were Jamie Chung, who plays Blink and Emma Dumont, who plays Polaris, two characters comic book fans might be familiar with, but that these two are clearly looking to make their own.
They’re also very clear on the underlying political message, with Dumont saying, straight up: “this show is about bigotry,” and both of them discussing what it means to be different and how we can all relate to the feeling even if we don’t necessarily have powers.
“I think it’s important to show,” added Chung, who also teased that her character would be the funnier of these two, with Polaris having a way more negative outlook on life – and yet, at the same time, much more confidence about the fact that she’s different.
They also both have physical markings that identify them as human, which makes blending in almost impossible. Interestingly, none of the male characters do. A metaphor for sexism? Who knows?
What we do know is that this show hasn’t started and we already want so much more of it.

The Gifted premieres October 2nd at 9/8c on FOX.
