We love a good adaptation. But sometimes the best adaptations don’t come playing on the big screen in a movie theater. Sometimes the best adaptations are those that you pay the $7.99 a month to have Netflix for.
Yes, we love our Netflix shows and movies. We’re excited that Matthew Quick’s Sorta Like a Rock Star is close to a deal with Netflix as a feature film. The adaptation had originally been under Fox Searchlight.
But here’s the thing, we totes admit that we love that everything leads back to Twilight. Bryce Dallas Howard is going to direct the film. That excites us – as most of you know – Twilight was our first love. But besides that, what we love is that Quick is going to adapt the book to film.
If you aren’t familiar with the book, here’s the synopsis –
Amber Appleton lives in a bus. Ever since her mom’s boyfriend kicked them out, Amber, her mom, and her totally loyal dog, Bobby Big Boy (aka Thrice B) have been camped out in the back of Hello Yellow (the school bus her mom drives). But Amber, the self-proclaimed princess of hope and girl of unyielding optimism, refuses to sweat the bad stuff. Instead, she focuses on bettering the lives of her alcoholic mother and her quirky circle of friends: a glass-ceiling-breaking single mother raising a son diagnosed with autism; Father Chee and The Korean Divas for Christ (soul-singing ESL students); a nihilist octogenarian; a video-game-playing gang of outcasts; and a haiku-writing war vet. But then a fatal tragedy threatens Amber’s optimism—and her way of life. Can Amber continue to be the princess of hope?
He’s already adapted his other book, The Reason You’re Alive, for director Jay Roach. We’re always excited when an author stays involved with his adaptation. It gives us faith.
The film is being produced by Gotham Group’s Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Temple Hill.
