When I think of romance, love triangle isn’t usually the first thing that pops in my head. I am truly, truly a canon relationship girl, but every once in a while the chemistry between two people is just so hard to ignore that you can’t look away. You can’t not fall for them or feel those oh so real palpitations in your own heart when they look at each other.
This is exactly what happened to me when I started watching True Blood. Vampire Bill Compton is the love of half fairy/half human Sookie Stackhouse’s life. He was her first everything, so that means an awful lot. And man did he have what writer Alanna Bennett so epically tweeted about- “the look.” But, and this is a BIG but, my god, the way vampire Viking Eric Northam looked at Sookie, I could not help but wish he would get a chance to win her heart. My wish came true in season 4. Though their love story didn’t last as long as I had hoped, it had some truly unforgettable moments. Here are just a few of the times I fell for the romance of Eric and Sookie.
As much as Sookie tries to resist Eric, her dreams don’t lie. She secretly feels a growing distrust of Bill and an attraction to Eric that is becoming harder to resist. Look how gentle the fiercest vampire is with the woman he loves-even if it is a dream.
Dreams become reality when Eric makes his move and Sookie finally lets herself go. The way he inhales her- OMG!
Sookie already knows the answer to her question, but she asks it anyway. Ever the aggressor, Eric makes his desires very clear.
A softer Eric with no memories still realizes how much he adores Sookie. Instead of demanding what he wants, he asks. I’m melting.
Not wanting to scare his love, he hides his fangs from Sookie. He was so cute trying to be sweet. I don’t ever remember Bill being that way-not hating, just saying.
Sookie tried to resist Eric before and kinda sorta failed. The fact that he needs her now helps her let her guard down with him.
Eric was beginning to realize that he didn’t want to put Sookie in danger by living with her. When he walks away, she calls out to him, and of course he comes running back. This hug! The way he holds on to her!
Well, it was about damn time!
Eric and Sookie had some really sweet and hot n’ heavy moments after becoming a couple. But the reality of their lives started to seep in. With their friends in danger, they had to come out of their love nest at some point. The thought of that crushed them both- and me!
Even if it meant sacrificing her own safety, Sookie stayed by Eric’s side. The wall she put up to shield herself from him had completely fallen down.
She couldn’t let him go without saying “I love you”. My heart just broke when she reached for his hand even though I knew from the start that it wouldn’t last.
Even though she’s breaking his heart, he still gives her a longing look. How could she walk away? Nope, I’m not still crying years later- yes I am.
Sookie took a stake to her first love to save Eric. Yep, she’s still in love- you can’t tell me any different.
While Bill and Sookie have the central love story of True Blood, I couldn’t help the love I felt and still feel for Eric and Sookie. Their relationship seemed very one sided from the start, but looking back there was always an undercurrent of desire coming from Sookie-she even admitted it at the end of their affair. But boy, what could have been. Eric was more sincere, kinder, and never shy about what he wanted, but first loves are sometimes hard to shake. I often wonder what could have been if Sookie met Eric first…I guess that’s what fan fic is for, right?
If you want to fall in love with Eric and Sookie like I did or just wanna catch some kick ass vampire shit, you can watch all seven seasons of True Bloodon Amazon Prime.
