Ships. In entertainment, and especially, in fandom, we live and die by them. Which is why every Friday, we’ll be focusing on a couple, analyzing why we ship them, and overall, just proclaiming our eternal love for those couples that make us say:
I will go down with this ship, particularly Quellcrist Falconer and Takeshi Kovacs from Altered Carbon.
She Set Him Free
Before Takeshi met Quellcrist he was lost. Sure, he had an organization that he was part of, a mission to accomplish, and a sister to care for. But being with Quell changed him as a man, as a warrior, and as a brother. With her he could see his life and what he wanted with such clarity that he felt lost without her. He depended on her to keep him human, grounded, and loved. And this bond, this love, is what kept him free even when they were apart from each other, no matter the bodies, worlds, or minds that separated them.
He Calmed Her Tortured Mind
In season 2, Quell was going being ravaged by the presence taking residence in her mind. She was tortured, alone, and oh so lost. And even though he knew what she had gone through, what her hands had done, he came to her aid. Even if it just meant holding her when she was shaking out of her very own skin, he was there. Because of him she was able to survive, thrive, and outlive the madness that had overtaken her. And she came out stronger for it all. Because of him and how much he loved her, no matter the amount of time that had passed.
She Guided Him When He Was Alone
There was a part of Quell that Kovacs always carried with him. No matter the body that he was in, she was there helping him when he was vulnerable, broken, and lost. She had left an imprint in his mind and his stack that will never be erased or replaced. Sure, it might not be so healthy to speak to a ghost of the woman that you loved all those eons ago. But what else was he supposed to do when lost and alone like he was? Quell calmed his burning mind and guided him down a path that kept his head up while the world crumbled around him.
He Taught Her It Was Ok to Love
For the longest time, Quell just thought of herself as a warrior. She was the leader of the rebellion, the Envoys, and nothing else. Then Takeshi Kovacs came into her life and showed her that it was more than ok to let your walls down and allow love to come in. Because of him she knew there was more to this world than the battle they were fighting. There was companionship, friendship, passion, and a connection to each other that neither had felt before. Their love changed the universe and I have no doubt that their story is far from over.
Altered Carbon is set to come back for season 3 on Netflix.
