I don’t remember Brave New World too fondly. Maybe it’s because I was too young to be reading that book, maybe because as teenagers we rebel against expectations, or maybe dystopias weren’t in back then and my mind had a harder time processing it. I’m not sure, but either way, the news that Peacock – the new streaming service from NBC – was doing an adaptation of a novel I didn’t really enjoy wasn’t something I celebrated.
And then I watched the trailer. And now I’m like ….hmmm …it is quarantine, what else do I have to do?
Because, I mean, at least it’s a new idea. And also, so many pretty people in flowy clothes. Plus it’s not like there’s that much content vying for my attention.
Brave New World, published in 1932, is set in a futuristic society “that has achieved peace and stability through the prohibition of monogamy, privacy, money, family, and history itself,” which sounds very much like something that would only be good on paper, and cause a hell of a lot of trouble. Which, you know, makes for a good show.
Maybe.
Either way, I’m probably going to give it a chance. You can watch the trailer and tell me if you’ll join me.
Will you be watching Brave New World?
Brave New World will be available to stream on Peacock’s launch day, Wednesday, July 15.
