Ships. In entertainment, and especially, in fandom, we live and die by them. Which is why every Friday, we’ll be focusing on a couple, analyzing why we ship them, and overall, just proclaiming our eternal love for those couples that make us say:
I will go down with this ship, particularly Evie Carnahan and Rick O’Connell from The Mummy!
They Challenged Each Other
From the very start, they were challenging each other. And this wasn’t “pulling your pigtails” kind of behavior that I loathe to the moon and back. This was, “I know you’re smart like me. I know you’re tough like me. And you’re so damn beautiful while I’m too emotionally constipated to actually talk to you like a normal human being.” And that goes for both of them, Evie and Rick. Yes, we said both.
With Rick’s support and challenging, Evie grew as a person and as a character. She learned from him that she could save the day from the craziest of adventures and monsters with just her wits. While she taught him how to not solve everything with brute force, aka what Rick did most of the time. And it worked so well and it’s why they are set apart from the “pulling your pigtails” stereotype.
They Understood Each Others Talents
Evie was the smart one of this whole shebang and Rick knew it. Evie knew it. Even the bad guys aka The Mummy knew it. She was the one to get things done, to solve the puzzles, and save the day. With some help from Rick of course. Because as much as she was the brains of this operation, he was the muscle. He’s the one who gave her time to solve the puzzles and led her to where she needed because he was her guide.
This understanding of each other’s talents in the midst of so much craziness with The Mummy made them a couple worth knowing and cheering for. Also, can we talk about the way that Rick looked at Evie when she was getting her geek on? There was admiration, respect, and a bit of love there. And we felt for Rick. Who wouldn’t look at Rachel Weisz with heart eyes?
They Were the Bisexual Awakening of the Ages
Reading this section of I Will Go Down with This Ship might be a bit confusing to some. Do we really love Evie and Rick and think they should be together because they’re pretty and pretty together is a bisexual awakening waiting to happen. Yes, yes we do. We might be a little vain when it comes to this but Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser have a special place in our hearts when we think back to The Mummy.
Plus think back to Evie’s curls and Rick’s forearms. Swoon worthy!
