Apparently, there is still something very wrong with Esther.

In an article released by Deadline, it was announced that a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan is in the works. The movie titled Orphan: First Kill will see Isabelle Fuhrman return to reprise the role of Esther. Also joining the cast is Julia Stiles. If you are not familiar with the movie Orphan, let me break it down for you.

Esther (Fuhrman) is adopted by Kate and John, a married couple played by Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard. They believe she is an innocent 9-year-old girl but it turns out that she’s actually a grown woman named Leena who has primordial dwarfism. Quite a twist right? I was so shocked when it came and it was one of the best twists in a film i’ve seen.

I loved the first Orphan film so I am super excited to see the prequel. Here’s the synopsis for Orphan: First Kill.
Leena Klammer orchestrates a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility and travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But Leena’s new life as “Esther” comes with an unexpected wrinkle and pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost.
I’m already intrigued. If you’re wondering how they plan to pull this off now that Isabelle is 23 years old but was 12 when she shot Orphan, according to Deadline, filmmakers will be utilizing a combination of forced perspective shooting and a world-class makeup team. The film directed by William Brent Bell, known for creepy film The Boy, is currently shooting right now in Winnipeg.
I am really looking forward to this film and I hope that we get a deeper dive into why Leena AKA Esther, does the things she does. There has to be some motivation behind a young woman making the decision to masquerade as a child to infiltrate family homes. I want a real look at her past before we just go right into her moving in with the first family she terrorized.
