I miss the movie theater experience desperately. The excitement and anticipation, the new film previews, the popcorn, and of course the collective experience of watching movie magic (sometimes movie mediocrity) make the movie theater a wonderous place.
There’s no way of knowing when the beloved movie experience will be back in full swing, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from calling our names with movies we are longing to see in just about any setting we can get them. Here are just a few of the movies we are psyched to see in the new year:
Dune
Other worlds and finding your destiny are the hallmarks of a sci-fi fantasy come true. Dune is anticipated to be a breathtaking look at one of the most beloved sci-fi stories around. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac and more, this star studded cast is set to light the galaxies ablaze in 2021. I’m sorry, did I mention Oscar Isaac? Just making sure I hit the highlights.
Candyman
2020 has been a horrific year on so many levels, so I wasn’t sure about wanting to see horror films anytime soon. But what better way to overcome that anxiety than a visit with a monster you think you already know. Nia DaCosta’s sequel revisits the legend of Chicago’s sinister sweet toothed serial killer in Candyman. It is set to be released this summer.
Black Widow
I was a little on the fence about wanting to see this, but my respect for Natasha’s strength and the fullness of a story she deserves have won me over. Black Widow has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the Avengers burst onto our movie radar, and she deserves the shine she is gonna get from a solo film, even if it comes posthumously. Plus, we wanna see some girls kick ass in the new year, and there is no one better to bring it than Natasha Romanoff.
Coming 2 America
There’s nothing better than a comfort movie. That movie that you can rely on to make you laugh or cry on cue no matter what. Eddie Murphy’s classic 1988 hit Coming to America is one of those films. Murphy is taking another crack at lighting in the bottle with a sequel to his beloved tale. Hopefully, the magic of a prince can bring us some much needed 2021 joy.
Cruella
There is no trailer. There isn’t much we know about the plot. We do know that in 2021 we want to see Emma Stone as a young Cruella de Vil! We can’t wait to see what Disney does with their new take on this twisted tale.
King Richard
Our love and respect for tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams is immeasurable. It is only natural to want to know how that greatness came to be. King Richard is a biographical story about the role their father, Richard Williams, played in the sisters’ rise to dominate the tennis world.
Spider-Man 3
Marvel and Sony are keeping this super story under wraps. We are set to see Spidey swing back into our lives in the late winter of 2021. The rumor mill is swirling around this story like crazy. The multiverse, all of the previous versions of Spider-Man returning, multiple villains- whatever the story, we are ready for it!
Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings
Shang-Chi is one of Marvel’s most anticipated arrivals for 2021. It boasts an almost exclusively Asian cast to tell the story of the titular character and explore his connection to the Ten Rings organization. Representation in movies matters so much. This story being told on the big screen is a moment for us all to celebrate loudly and proudly!
The Woman in the Window
Amy Adams stars in this thriller about a woman with a crippling anxiety disorder that makes it impossible to leave her house. While she is home, she witnesses a murder across the street, but no one believes her because of her mental history. Whew, we feel anxious just thinking about what might happen in this movie. No matter what happens, it is sure to be an edge of your seat movie treat!
Eternals
Eternals will explore an immortal alien race of beings who have lived on Earth for thousands of years in secret. The cast of the Eternals is one of the most diverse and is set to introduce Marvel’s first openly gay character. Starring Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiana, Kit Harrington and Richard Madden (our Kings in the North- sorry, couldn’t help it), this superhero story is not to be missed.
A Few Other Films We Might Wanna Check Out
The Matrix 4
The Mauritanian
Raya and the Last Dragon
No Time to Die
A Quiet Place Part II
The Suicide Squad
Cherry
The Addams Family II
Whether movie theater doors swing wide open in 2021 or not, it’s pretty clear that Hollywood still has much to offer us film buffs. What are some movies you can’t wait to see? Some you aren’t so keen on? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section or on Twitter! Happy movie watching!
