If you can’t stand the thought of saying goodbye to the After movie franchise just yet, we have some news. Deadline has announced that an After prequel and sequel are in the works.
Here’s what we know so far:
“The prequel will center on a teenage Hardin, who is navigating his first love. The events that take place in these formative years shape the bedrock of the troubled but passionate Hardin we meet in the current After films.”
“The sequel will center on the next generation in the After universe – Tessa and Hardin’s kids Emery, Auden, and their cousin Addy navigate the turbulent waters of growing up and trying not to make the mistakes of their parents did many years ago.”
If you’ve read all of the books in Anna Todd’s After series, you know that there is a prequel of sorts in the last book Before. It follows a little bit of Hardin’s life prior to him meeting Tessa, so we hope there are elements of this incorporated into the story. After We Fell/After Ever Happy movie Director Castille Landon is set to write and direct both the prequel and the sequel, which will be shooting back to back this fall.
According to an article released by Seventeen, due to the fact that the prequel involves a younger Hardin and the sequel involves a time jump, Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Josephine Langford will not be returning to reprise their roles as Hardin and Tessa.

I’m going to be honest, like some After fans, I have mixed feelings about this. Especially knowing Josephine and Hero are not coming back. It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing our beloved Hessa, so yeah, it hurts a little. If they remain true to Anna Todd’s books, and give us a great cast, then maybe, but if it turns into something that deviates in a big way, this might be a big disappointment. The After series means a lot to a great deal of people and this fandom is passionate.
Jennifer Gibgot (17 Again, Step Up), Brian Pitt, Wattpad’s Aron Levitz, CalMaple’s Mark Canton (Den of Thieves, 300) and Courtney Solomon (Cake, An American Haunting) are returning to produce the new films.
