Marvel Studios keeps dropping new looks at upcoming projects, and we are not complaining at all. This time around, Marvel gave us our first official teaser of the upcoming film Eternals. Academy-Award winner Chloé Zhao directed this epic movie. Marvel is lucky to have Zhao’s direction on such a massive Phase 4 movie that introduces characters played by an all-star cast that will surely have roles in the MCU for the foreseeable future.
Seriously, Game of Thrones fans must be thrilled that Richard Madden and Kit Harington will be reunited on screen.
This teaser trailer comes after Marvel Studios Celebrates The Movies reel we got three weeks ago. That’s when we got a super quick glimpse at the Eternals. Now, we have more footage than ever before. Finally, we get to see the Eternals suited up and their powers in action. Even still, this teaser feels like just that. Marvel Studios keeps much of the Eternals under wraps, making it all the more exciting to imagine everything we haven’t seen yet.
The teaser starts with beautiful landscapes that ground the universe, only interrupted by a giant, rune-laden spaceship. Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World” leads us into those gorgeous shots. Gemma Chan‘s Sersi is the first to speak as she seemingly shows Ikaris that specific place for the first time. While Seris is not the leader of the Eternals (that role belongs to Salma Hayek’s Ajak), Chan is the lead of this film. Kevin Feige said as much in a recent interview with Variety.
“So for Sersi, for instance — and if there was a lead in this ensemble, it is Sersi, it is Gemma Chan — we looked at and read all sorts of women for that part. And ended up really believing that Gemma was best for it. And thankfully, she’s proven that to be the case in the final movie.”
The poster below is further proof because Chan is leading this future blockbuster because she’s top-billed on it. Right below Chan is Richard Madden, who plays Ikaris, essentially an all-powerful Eternal and also Sersi’s soulmate throughout the ages. That is evident through the shots in the trailer that parallel each other. That’s right; we’re talking about the incredibly intimate and romantic moments where these two are wrapped in each other’s arms, foreheads touching.
After WandaVision, we are very much here for the Marvel Cinematic Universe valuing romantic relationships in their properties. Of course, we all know iconic couples in the MCU’s past, but it’s still rare for a romantic relationship to have such pull in a teaser like Sersi and Ikaris do in this teaser.
Then we get a voiceover from Hayek’s Ajak that gives a basic rundown of what the Eternals are all about: “We have watched and guided. We have helped them progress and seen them accomplish wonders. Throughout the years, we have never interfered, until now.” What makes them interfere? That question has yet to be answered. Any deep dive into an individual character could give you a list of possibilities. Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, Dane Whitman, Ajak, and Thena have detailed pasts that could show up on the big screen.
One of the biggest questions on the heels of this trailer is why the Eternals didn’t interfere when Thanos snapped away half of the universe. Where were they then? That’s the same question that the Avengers posed to Carol Danvers when they learned about her. She gave them an excellent answer: “There are a lot of other planets in the universe, and, unfortunately, they didn’t have you guys.” The Eternals could say the same thing.
They are much bigger players in the history of the Universe, them being immortal and all. That’s why it’s funny to watch Ikaris throw his name in the running to lead the Avengers and be met with a chorus of laughter from his fellow Eternals. We are in for one cosmic ride with this group of heroes. This teaser has so much packed in such a short video that it’s virtually impossible not to have the highest of hopes for this one.
