Modern Love 2×02 “The Night Girl Finds a Day Boy” is a story about bringing the most unlikely of people together. Zoe suffers from delayed sleep phase syndrome. This basically means that she’s asleep during the hustle and bustle of the day. But when night time comes, she thrives and lives her best life. She looks quite content with her way of living until Jordan comes around and we get to see their love being tested.
Now, we must admit that this was the ultimate test of opposites attract. Zoe is cynical, bubbly, and is so entrenched in her way of living that it becomes weird to let anyone in her bubble. That makes it so she finds regular human interaction a little weird. In anyone else’s hands this would lead to a character crashing and burning. But in the hands of Modern Love we were able to see that she’s just a messy person like the rest of us.
Same thing could be said for Jordan. He’s a teacher and man who falls for Zoe faster than expected. She fascinates him in a way no one else has. And like her, he is messy. He has expectations that ignore Zoe’s worries because a part of him believes she’s just a scared introvert. Which, we totally get. We spent the entirety of the episode side-eying Zoe and wondering if this was all a way to preserve her way of living.
They are complete opposites and somehow they still work. And we’ll admit that it moved us. In a way, TV and the media that we consume has taught us to fix others and their problems. And that ultimately isn’t fair for you, your loved one, or those around you. That’s not to say that we should stop changing. We should always be doing that. But we shouldn’t be in a relationship because we want to fix each other.
A huge part of loving someone is accepting all the parts of someone. And yes, that means the ugly ones too. And through trial and error you find out where you stand, what your future holds, and who you are in this relationship and outside of it. Trust us, love changes you and if you avoid trying to fix each other, you experience this sort of freedom that is grounded in a certainty that you are loved no matter how messy you are.
We want that. We want Zoe and Jordan’s opposite attracts love. We want learning new things in our lives without stopping being ourselves. We want kindness, hope, and generosity grounded in wanting to be around someone because of who they are. We want all of that and we think that Modern Love‘s “The Night Girl Finds a Day Boy” completely exemplifies that and then some.
