The Supernatural prequel, titled The Winchesters, has found its Mary and John. Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger have been set to play the famed parents of Sam and Dean Winchester. Donelly is best known for American Housewife, Z-O-M-B-I-E-S, and The Broken Ones. And Rodger is known for The In Between, Murder RX, and Quiet in My Town.
According to EW, Mary is a 19-year-old who has been at this for a long time. She knows what it is to fight the forces of evil since she was a child, following the lore that we learned from Supernatural. John is a “selfless and clear-headed” veteran who most likely has no idea about the supernatural in their world.
Their lives collide when tragedy strikes Mary’s life and she’s forced to take a look at her life and whether she wants to continue taking on the family business. And when John arrives in town as Mary’s dealing with the disappearance of her father, well…things get complicated and Mary finds herself on a new adventure.
The Winchesters is billed as “the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.” And to put it frankly, we’ve been a little concerned. With a story as vast as Supernatural, The Winchesters has a lot to live up to.
Also, we’ve been worried about what this show might mean for Mary herself. Previously played by Samantha Smith, she was constantly pushed to the side and used as a plot device or another when the fandom wasn’t coming after her character for choosing self-care when facing her new reality after her return.
