We’re nearing the home stretch of the first season of Good Sam with still no indication of whether it will be renewed for a season two. But rather than dwell on the uncertainty, we want to focus on everything that went down in Good Sam 1×09 “A Light in the Storm.”
Good Sam 1×09 “A Light in the Storm” begins with an influx of patients coming from a bus crash, flooding the hospital with more patients than it has room for. And due to a snowstorm, they also have limited supplies. This leaves almost everyone in a terrible spot as doctors are unable to fully care for their patients who need their lives saving treatment.
This episode is probably the most medicine we’ve seen across the entire season. We actually really loved Sam, Lex and everyone getting down and dirty with some trauma patients.
It was great seeing that the main stories this week were about the patients and not so much of the drama between everyone. Sure, there were some continuations of already established storylines, but the main focus was these bus crash victims and whether all of them would survive despite all the obstacles that were in front of them.
So let’s discuss what unfolded in Good Sam 1×09 ”A Light in the Storm.”
Be Better
One of the highlights of Good Sam 1×09 ”A Light in the Storm” was the dynamic between Griff and Kevin aka the kid who came in suffering pretty bad injuries from getting hit by the bus. Through their interactions, we get a glimpse of a lighter side of Griff – a side we rarely get to see.
It made me think about what Griff and Sam’s relationship used to be like before the accident. We’ve only ever known these two when they’ve been at odds with each other but it might not have always been like that. I imagine Griff was a fun and great dad before the accident, willing to goof around with Sam. But the accident cast a dark shadow over the Griffith family and they have still yet to recover.
Perhaps now that all the truth is out in the open, things will get back to the way they used to be in some way. But only time will tell.
During their little banter, Kevin agrees not to die in order for Griff to agree to do the surgery. So, Griff heads to the operating room with Sam only for everything to go wrong. As a result of the snowstorm, the hospital’s power goes out and the emergency generator does not kick in. This leaves Sam and Griff stuck doing a six-hour surgery with no power.
This poor kid seriously can’t catch a break. Not only does he get hit by a bus, but his parents can’t be there for his surgery which also happens to be the surgery from hell. In order to do the procedure needed to save his life while the power is out, he needs blood but the catch is there is only enough for one patient.
This leaves Sam with a very difficult choice to make. She could give it to Joey’s patient who is on dialysis, to a young boy whose heart is failing, or to Lex’s patient who is a former Air Force vet. It’s a tough decision that has life and death implications. Weighing her options, she chooses Kevin which means he gets to live but that puts the other patients in a very threatening position.
Life’s Short
It’s a sad turn of events as Joey’s patient ends up dying due to not receiving the blood. This is especially difficult as Joey is already fearing he has lost his fiancée, Tim. This being one of the only patients we’ve seen Joey connect with, it was rough seeing him lose her. After all, the only reason this woman was in this situation is because she wanted to meet her grandson. Who can blame her for that?
Luckily, Lex’s patient was able to hold on and wait for the blood that would come later. We couldn’t imagine waking up and hearing you could be the cause of a major accident so we’re glad that it really wasn’t her fault. And it was great that she had Lex by her side to support her and who was determined to help her figure out why things went so wrong.
But despite being the blood recipient, Kevin’s day isn’t getting better in Good Sam 1×09 ”A Light in the Storm.” Even though he pulled through surgery, the latest blow is that his parents have arrived at the hospital but as patients themselves. We don’t know how bad it is just that they were one of the many victims of a highway car pileup.
What also makes matters worse is in the final moments of Good Sam 1×09 ”A Light in the Storm,” Sam discovers that her mom’s car was in the wreck, implying that she could be hurt as well. It would be such a tragedy for Sam to lose her mother when they’re on bad terms. Even Griff, who is in the doghouse himself, urged Sam to forgive and speak to her mother.
Sam may have decided to follow Griff’s plea but it might be too late. Guess we’ll see next week as this episode is to be continued…
Elsewhere in the episode
- I’m so glad that Tim is okay and that they can go back to planning their dream wedding. You can see how much Joey and Tim care for each other and I am so here for their happiness.
- I like how this episode showed just how vital nurses are. Donna clearly helped keep the hospital running practically by herself so props to her.
- Caleb and Sam are meant for each other. I said what I said. Or I may just be caught up in how cute they are together. Either way, I want this relationship explored event more.
- It’s a shame Lex and Sam aren’t in a great place and that they can’t lean on one another when they need to. You can tell that Sam wanted to gush all of her feeling to Lex but didn’t know if Lex was ready for it.
- Seeing Lex, Griff, and Joey all bond with their patients is something I want to see more of.
Catch Good Sam on CBS on Wednesdays at 10/9c.
