Killing Eve‘s 4×06 “Oh Goodie, I’m the Winner” was satisfying for many reasons, mainly Villanelle telling Eve “I’m done with you.” It was perfection and felt like the cathartic release that we all needed. Because we too are done with Eve in many ways this season. And it’s only if the show allows Eve to be the woman we know her to be, will we welcome her with open arms and forget the mess that has been made of her character this season.
You could see the Eve that we know and love in “Oh, Goodie, I’m the Winner.” It was in the way that she cared for Villanelle, watched out for her, and tried to be a bit more honest about why she turned her back on Villanelle. And it was good that Villanelle told Eve no. Things aren’t just suddenly fixed and magic and rainbows. And it makes sense. Eve hurt Villanelle and set her aside because Eve had bigger fish to fry and it wasn’t fair for either of them.
We want this Eve to stay. Because we think that Eve thought of her previous self as too weak to fight the battles that were needed. So she fashioned herself a suit of armor and went too far; to the point where she lost herself and we lost sight of who she was. And that’s made us go “ughhhh” every time she’s come on screen in season 4; something we absolutely hate because we don’t want to waste our time and “hate-watch” something. We want to enjoy it.
Through major perspective, and reading our previous reviews, we also want Eve to keep parts of this new Eve. Keep that self-assured nature. Keep the bravery and the wit. But you can throw away the parts of Eve that have used people left and right this season. That is not our Eve and we don’t want Villanelle to rise if that is the basis of it. Eve deserves better. And so does Villanelle.
What has to come next is Eve coming after Villanelle. Villanelle has stood her ground and made her position very clear. And the only way that Villaneve is going to move forward is if Eve lays her cards out and shows Villanelle that she cares about her. Not just the killer part of her. That’s not enough. Eve has to accept all parts of Villanelle, including the good if they are ever to find some peace in this world together.
With two episodes left, it’s going to be a hard sell. So we’re crossing our fingers, lighting the candles, and hoping that the only place we go after Killing Eve’s 4×06 “Oh Goodie, I’m The Winner” is up. Please, Dear Lord, let it be up in some way or another. Because we are tired and we just want the queer people to be happy murder girlfriends together.
Killing Eve airs Sundays at 8/7c on BBC America.
