This episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star picked up right where last week left off: with Owen focusing on his father. In “Shift-Less” we finally got to meet his dad and get a glimpse into his not-so-happy childhood. Judd also spent time with his son, and the father/son duo had an adventure that took a very unexpected turn.
Owen’s Childhood
Last week Owen learned that his anger management problem came from his father abandoning him when he was 12. His father is very sick, and he pays a visit to him in California. Over the episode we learn that Owen’s dad didn’t leave: Owen and his mom left him.
One of the most shocking things about this episode was learning about Owen’s brother Tyler who died in horrible accident. Tyler wanted to ride waves with Owen in the ocean, but he was pulled under and was without oxygen for too long. Owen calls 9-1-1 and does his best to save Tyler, but unfortunately he doesn’t make it. This was devastating and can absolutely explain why Owen has issues today.
Honestly, as sad as Owen’s story was, this was a nice change of pace from the usual Owen. We got to see a different side of him, and we really enjoyed the touching phone call between Owen and TK. We’re hoping to see more of this Owen in the future.
Judd and Wyatt
Wyatt returned in “Shift-Less”, and it seems he’s been acting out a bit. Judd had to go get him from the police station, and he wasn’t too happy about it. But it’s understandable that Wyatt has issues: he just found out about his father and has this whole new life that was kept from him for years.
In order to bond and help Wyatt heal, Judd takes him horseback riding. Unfortunately, Judd falls off the horse and not only breaks his leg, but his bone is sticking out of the leg. Gross. We can’t imagine how much this had to hurt. For a moment, we really thought Judd wasn’t going to make it. But luckily Judd’s dad comes and saves the day just in time (and it was wonderful to see Barry Corbin again.)
Let us be perfectly clear: Writers, if you EVER think about killing off Judd (or Grace for that matter), we will riot! Do you hear us? Judd and Grace are the BEST, and we will not allow anything to happen to them.
Other Thoughts
- It was adorable when Wyatt referred to Judd as “Dad” on Judd’s cast.
- While we enjoyed the stories between Judd and Wyatt and Owen and his family, does anyone else feel like it’s been ages since we’re seen Paul and Marjan? Hopefully next week will have the entire team together.
